The BLACK Escher

Pictured below is what I believe to be the Black Escher. The label on the back is beyond being legible. It is consistent with the glue and style of Escher labels even extending past the edge of the stone and curling up on the end. This is not a dark blue Escher. I have one. The slurry is indicative of the Thuringia Escher stones.

The scratch pattern is the same as the Yellow Green Escher pictured side by side. The size is the same. It came from Germany. This stone is harder than the Yellow Green Escher pictured. More important is the final finish it puts on a str8 razor. It is similar to a Barbers Delight maybe slightly finer. Regardless, this is an extremely fine final finisher that I am happy to own. Mike, I had a big Hohenzollern that was that color. I don't have any photos and I sold the stone a year or so ago but it was way darker than a dark blue and turned black when you put the water to it. So quite likely Escher made some too.

Dang, that was quick, the slurry is what gave it away for me. I wish the label was intact but I would rather the stone gave the performance... It does that.

If it had a perfect label and came in a pristine original box would you dare to use it?

I could be wrong, but I think that's just dark blue. I have one that looks just like it.

Have to confess, that's what i thought too. Puts a lovely finish on an edge.

The old hohenzollern stones came very dark and blackish, the labels were off yellow, like old paper, like this stone.

Case solved. I have been research a stone I just got one in a barbers case that I just purchased. I'll have to post a pic. Definitely the same as yours, Mine is 5 x 2.5 and came with the slurry stone exactly the same as the main stone, which had me scratching my head for days. Similar slurry to escher.

Thought it might have been a Black Arkansas, or even a French La Luna, but I had never seen either of these with a slurry stone. Once I honed a razor on it, I realized this is a pretty special stone, leaves a polish on the bevel similar to an Escher, but cuts much faster.

My new finishing stone!

Stuart it's very close to the YG. The black stone is a little harder. I consider the Barbers Delight a very fine YG type. Once you take the edge this far, it becomes very delicate and easy to over do it. Hope that makes sense.
