Norton hones question.

So i ordered a Norton hone set and just have a few questions.. I have been reading on the 4k/8k stone that the grit is courser than it actually is.. i have read a few threads on this but they happen to be from several years ago.. has Norton addressed this problem or is this still ongoing? I spoke to Lynn over the phone and he said that all i would really need to do is just lap about an 8th of an inch off it..(at least on the 4k side from what i understood) How is the 1K stone for setting beveles and the 8k for finishing? It also comes with the lapping stone, what are yalls opinion on it? thanks!

there is no problem with the grit of the Nortons, you can shave very nicely off the 8k
the 1k is very aggressive cutter so be careful with it.

How should i set the bevel on the 1K? is it similar to the shapton 1K thats the hone i learned off of from Lynn.

Lynn used the norton 1k for bevels, lapping plate for flattening for years. Sharpened and finished on the on the 4/8. He got the job done. Other alternatives have come down the pike since then. Lynn now uses the Chosera 1k for bevels and a diamond plate for flattening. He still uses the 4/8 for sharpening/finishing much of the time. Before going on to a naniwa 12k or an equivalent alternative. I've followed his lead and do much the same thing.

So you can get the job done with what you've got coming. Matter of fact many guys, who are not afflicted with the HAD, go no further than 8k finishing to get stellar shaves. I was taught early on to test shave at the 8k level before moving up in grit. The logic being that if it wasn't "there" at 8k going to 12 or 16 was an exercise in futility and frustration. Give them a go when you receive them and get to know them before you draw any conclusions. :gl:

Amen brother! With a light touch, you can get a good shave out of 8K...if you don't, time to go back to the stones...

you set the bevel the same as any other stone.

Thanks guys, should i go over all the stones with the lapping hone before i use them?

Yes, draw a grid, like tic tac toe with a pencil and lap them. I find it best to do this in the kitchen sink under lightly running water. There is a tutorial on it here.
