Shapton GS Before Jnat

I've been following all this talk about Shaptons/Sigmas & am very curious about getting some to use before my Oozuku. Wouldn't happen until after I get a new job, but I'm doing research in advance.

I'm thinking 500 (for serious bevel work if needed), 1,4,8, Oozuku (it's a fast cutter & I want to give the slurry a chance to break down--if I keep it really light & work it I actually get an almost mirror finish off of broken down slurry before I even go to water). I was poking around So's site & noticed he recommends 1,2,6 before the Jnat. Any ideas why? Allowing for longer slurry breakdown maybe?

i think now but dont know for sure but ,the sharper the edge the better the finisher will work,

I love coticules before Jnats :D

you can use the Oozuko after 8k, but you will need to use nagura and tomonagura for best results.
You can get on your ozuko from 6k synthetic but you will have to spend more time on it.

That's what I'm usually coming off of. I've been using a scope lately (doing lots of experimenting) & actually do think that more refined is better before the Jnat! :) Straight from the Norton was an interesting experiment, but I think there's a lot to be said for using a good prepolisher 1st. Under the scope the difference between the 8k scratches & even slurry sandblast is jawdropping--probably 30k easily on slurry, judging by the scratch size. There's no reason to wear out my tomonagura polishing that out!:rofl2:

I am very positive there is no finisher that can take on a 6k edge, in a reasonable amount of time.

The email was definitely to a razor stone customer I was testing a stone for but as So said it is a "very minimalist approach" not the ideal approach.

Well, when I am in the mood I go from one of those "narutakis" I have, which I estimate to be around the 6K mark (perhaps slightly higher) straight to the nakayama asagi. It does take longer than if I inserted an intermediate grit hone in there, but it is not prohibitively long, at least in my experience.

Mind you, since I got that Ozuku suita working again I rarely jump from the 6 to the Asagi any more.

I also often go from the Shapt 16 to the asagi too. Works fine. There's many ways to skin a cat, as my grandmother used to say! :)

Agree. I normally go from the Shapton 16k GS to the J nats. As previously stated, the sharper, the better.

I experiment with mixing and matching my hones a lot. I really like the edge off the Shapton 16K Glass. I think using my Ohzuku or Asagi produces very nice results after it as does a couple of strokes on the Shapton 30K Glass.........

When using Japanese stones as a finisher, I like going as high as I can on the other hones I have first. Lately I've been going coticule---Nakayama Maruichi Asagi/Oozuku. I really like the feel of that progression, the coticule just makes things really smooth, kind preps the razor for a natural stone before using the JNAT.

If I were going synthetics I would go as high a grit as possible before using a Japanese Natural meant for finishing a razor.

This is how I tend to do it as well, I seem to get the very best results that way.
I go as high as a 10K Chosera, a 12K Naniwa SS or a 15K Gokumyo before finishing on my JNats.

I too enjoy a good coticule before my nakayama. It cuts fast and removes the Chosera scratches well before working up the nagura progression, but I'm experimenting with how far I can push the coticule dilution phase before jumping to the appropriate nagura, or even straight to tomonagura.

I think you have a ton of options available, as seen in this thread, but the real trick regardless, is to have the razor "Shave Ready" on your choice of "Polisher" before moving to your "Finisher"... No matter how you get there you always have to go up the ladder of Bevel, Sharpen, Polish, and Finish... What ladder you lean against the wall is your choice..

On most of the razors I experimented on, I test shaved off the Norton edge 1st just to double-confirm the edge was @ its best off of that stone. Definitely I've come to agree w/ the posters in this thread: the more refined the edge is before the Jnat, the better/less work needs to be done.

I think, after looking @ lots of edges in the scope, I may have slightly overestimated my Oozuku's cutting speed. Max has said that a slow finisher is often a fine finisher & mine is extremely fine, so I think a good prepolishing is in order 1st. :)

Yes, as a general rule I think the expectation should be that a fine stone will generally be a slower stone for obvious reasons, although the converse is certainly not true in all cases. But, relatively speaking, there are "fast" finishers out there too. I think these might be the ones that you'd expect to pay higher for... :)
