Hey guys, I just won this auction. I was looking at ( from the top) hones 6 & 7. I think they are Thuringan/Escher type hones. I am speculating that the whitish stuff on #7 is the remnants of a label. What your guess?

I was watching that one, too, for the very same reasons. No matter the outcome it's nice to know the winning bid you put in was less than shipping. :)
I would be interested to see what those 2 hones look like after a good lapping.
Although I hope that you're right, and you may very well be, I venture they aren't. No. 6 has too rounded corners and 7x.75 seems off. No. 7's 6x11/8 looks better, but I don't think the lighter material is what's left of a label. Especially the lighter bit to the left, which seems to go round the side, looks different. Maybe the lighter bits are even the hone's natural colour, and the darker parts where it has absorbed oil etc.
But again, you might very well be right, and I'd certainly not have minded winning that lot. Do keep us posted!
Well, since we're guessing: I think it's an Arkansas. Great price regardless! I'd have snatched it up in a heartbeat if I'd have seen it. Just on the off chance it's what you're hoping. Really seems too yellow to be an Arkansas, but, that's my guess. My experience is limited!
Well....I busted! They are all medium and coarse grits. But they will be good for axes! :D
Glad to find that out, cuz I too was watching those. I had purchased 3 other stones that seller had put out in that same lot. I got all her good barbers hones, including a Duro 2 sided (was covered in paint though) and a PERFECT, MINT, 3 line Swaty from Pike with the label still intact. Included with that was a crap Satis-Factory Co. Hone that is in TERRIBLE shape. I've been lapping stones for 4 days now it seems. heheheh.Quote:

Someimes I make out like a bandit and sometimes not. But it is fun to do once in awhile...and it does not cost much, I used to spend more on booze in one night! :D

When I see auctions like that , I think of the original owner and how he used that particular selection of stones in his life.
Possibly the tools of his trade, not just a hobby.
