Honeing on just water

Is totally Rubed at this point,But have had this idea for awhile now.Your thoughts?
I hate breaking cadence to spray down my hone.
I feel that when one is honeing on water only as I do when finishing,one still creates a small amt. of slurry,maybe it do's not matter,maybe it do's.
Obviously needs to be made more stable and lower profile,am going to wire in a foot switch to activate the pump when honing on slurry.
Also want to experiment with other water mixed cutting fluids such as used with diamond faceting machines.
Total cost $9.95 + tax for a filtered Aquarium pump includes tubing and regulator valve,you can make it a steady stream or a drip (reminds me of when I was Young:)
Just the rambilings of a semi-retired old guy with not alot to do.

I like the idea, it's great. But I think that a constant flow of water will make it difficult to see how the blade cuts the water while honing.

Seems cool to me. No experience, means no opinion on functionality. This is just me, saying it seems smart. Thanks for posting!

The flow can be regulated with the valve to just drips,whereby you can sort of drag some water down the stone with the blade.
Granted, seeing how the blade moves the water is critical in the intial honeing stages,do you feel it is in the final stages? should in the perfect world be perfectally set by then.Thx for your thoughts.

I really like your idea and concepts on this Bill. That is what you call good old fashioned ingenuity. It is amazing what one can do when even thinking just a little out of the box. I especially would like to see what become of your experiments with other water cutting fluids. At times when I get to the final polishing stages I go to the sink and have a steady stream of water running while I complete my strokes. It seems, especially on the harder blades that even a micro can impede final edge progress. The flowing water seems to help clear it away. As much as it perhaps goes against logic and rules for honing you may even consider a slight angle on the hone at the water feed side. Or perhaps an adjuster so that if you should increase water flow you can increase angle and movement of water simultaneously. It would wash away and replenish a clean surface as you are in motion. I'm not sure if that makes sense but it sounds good :) Best Regards Ken

Not a dark horse at all.The thought is to flush the stone,not just wet it.
Am just thinking outside the box,even at the highest grit levels your removing metal,perhaps on a microscopic level.This idea may get relegated to the trash bin,just something to fiddle around with.
I do want to try differant lubricants also.is alot of space age stuff out there that has improved machining alot.

That is pretty cool. It is not something I see myself doing, I use a small pitcher that was made to pour a drop of water into a glass of single malt scotch. I just keep water in it all of the time. Has "The Macallan" painted on it. Anyway, it is people like you who keep the ball rolling with new ideas and inventions. Left to me we wouldn't even have the wheel. I think it is a great idea and I never would have thought of it if I lived to be a hundred ..... only 37 more years. :beer2:

Cool idea. I applaud ingenuity - practical or othewise. I like this concept.. I can see how a self-contained system with a filter in-line would be ideal for those who can't use the kitchen sink area to hone.
One additionall thought - a t-fitting with a second hose with a nozzle on it. That way you could hose off the razor without having to do it over the hone, or clear/wet the entire stone faster/evenly.

That is great idea. Just I will use it for lapping indoors over the winter.

AH yes,ye old S.C.H.S (self contained Honing station) added a 40 Micron filter today,see how long it filters.
garden section (drip irrigation) has all sorts of trick valves,nozzles etc,just havin some fun:)

My first impression? My edges look better in far less time (strokes)
Am I not honing on microscopic swarf and slurry? dunno.Am I flushing that stuff away?(if it exsists) I think so.
Will this blade shave any better?dunno, find out when I shave tomorrow.

Agreed,at certain stages in the process,slurry is a good thing.

On the finishing stage I think it might work as a charm instead of honing under running water in the sink, but like bigspendur says you can take advantage of the slurry when working on the lower grit stones.
