Looks, to me, like a Norton India Oilstone combo.
The side view looks like an oil filled two sided Carborundum in relatively good condition. A good hone for knives
OK, so looks like I got good hone for knife, what is great to as I was looking for new hone for my kitchen knives :-)
Thank you to all responds and your help!
I have a similar hone that I use for my pocketknives. I did try it on a razor...it will set a bevel and do it quick. You will lose a lot of metal. Mine is too much of a brute for razors.
Looks like a coarse/fine man-made oilstone to me.
I have a small stone like that and the fine surface is very hard like you describe - not too unusual when you consider how hard some barber's hones are, being another example of a synthetic stone.

Neil
I agree with others, I dont think You would want to take your nice razors to that stone...maby an old junker for practise though :) interesting none the less!
