Hi,
I wonder if anybody has tried to hone a straight razor to be shave ready with a a minumum required of time and stones.
from start to end with:
DMT1200 - for setting bevel as quick as possible
Franz Swaty - for the rest with some kind of unicote method. its fast cutting and can be used dry, wet, liquid soap etc in circular and regular X-stroked
What do you think of it? Any experience?
It works, the only adjustment I would make is a different bevel setter, search out "One Stone Honing" on here... Lynn and I tested just about every finish stone/hone you can name including a Swaty..
One thing you have to realize if you use the One Stone method though is the the bevel set becomes much more citical to your success you want a very shallow cutter so that you don't have deep gouges in the metal to smooth out with just a finisher and nothing inbetween.. Honestly the DMT would be my last choice to use for this method..

What other fast cutting bevel stones is there? Sounds like naniwa superstone 1000 grit is recomended? I have a Nice untouched swaty.
I have never honed but would like to start. With small kids and busy Job time does matter, thats the reason for cheking Into this metod. I have about 60 Nice Swedish razors that i would like to hone someday..
Is the method u descibe in the other post applicqble for a sswaty? I dont Think i should create slurry on a swaty?
Yes you can use the Swaty, I used a Synthetic Nagura or Prep stone to create a slurry on my Swaty but I am sure many other slurry stones would work too..
I specifically used the King 1k in many of my experiments simply because they are pretty cheap in comparision to many of the other 1k's, and also locally available to many here, the best without any doubt in my mind is the Chosera 1k but it is also very expensive..
If your intention is all out speed then the Naniwa SS 1k is not the right choice it is a superior polishing stone but not a fast one ..

PS: Please understand that there are different types of slurry that we use when talking razors
the Swaty does not really produce a slurry so you have to use a softer than the base (swaty) stone, nagura/slurry stone to produce the slurry and aid in cutting power..
i am equally curious but was thinking DMT 8k as bevel setter to alleviate concerns about having too much cleanup after setting the bevel then moving straight to a natural finisher at first with slurry then without.

Sounds like chosera 1k is what is needed since its fast but also Smoth, and the later is needed for the one hone method.
I dont Think i Will find a chosera in sweden or any store shipping to sweden :(
What is the second best option for dedicated bevel? King or Norton?
Tuff choice there, either will work I feel the King leaves a very slightly smoother edge then the Norton, and the Norton is slightly faster, I guess really whichever you can get cheaper :shrug: You might want to post this question in the "Nordic Region" subforum I bet the guys can point you better when it comes to ordering and prices then I can :) They might have info on getting any of these stones...Quote:

It did sound on other DMT fanatics that they get good results with DTM1.2K if the DMT is broked in well (like sharpened with some old knifes a couple of times).
If I manage to hone my first razor properly Ill be really happy.
really i would like to know how the DMT 8k would do as a bevel setter since the impression is that 1.2k or DMT in general leaves a rough edge to finish but I have heard no one who tried the 8k (which may realistically be 5k equivalent or less). the appealing thing is it requires no maintenance or lapping and should cut super fast since it is diamond. it might even be a good lapping plate for a natural 15k+ finisher like the welch slate i have that is giving me some of the best shaves ever.

There a decent amount of posts in this and other forums if you search on DMT 8000. Some people are using DMT1.2K -> DMT8K ->Diamind paste stropping and thats it. I have not seen that anyone sets the bevel with DMT8K it is used to replace norton 8K, and its fast and smoots so it can easily smooth out the risps from a DMT1.2K
I have not tried anything, I just searched and read.
Since I am an engineer and engineer generaly has a mental urge to always make thinks smaller and faster (not always good hehe) I would like to experiment with a set of mini-hones for stressed people on the run, and to see how good it can actually get.
I was thinking DTM1.2K->DMT8K->Barbers stone-> Crox and thats it.
The set of mini-hone stones that can actually fit in the pocked and are basically maintenance free would consist of: DMT W4E, DMT W4EE, Swaty stone.
Then I actually found this post from a guy that seems to be happy:

I think I will give it a try to see how this solution can be and evaluate time, maintenance, consistent results etc etc etc.
Note that this would just be a side experiment for people like me: Stressed, lack of time, no space, no time for maintenance, that just want to be able to set low/medium straights to be shave ready in a consistent and acceptable solution.
This is not a replacement for a decent honing system with proper stones, that in the end is the best solution. Its just an experiment as proof of concept.
Any feedback on the 3-stone mini hone system is more then welcome! All hones regardless of material should fit in a human hand, thats my requirement aswell :)
Don't use the DMT EE 8k as a lapping plate; slurry will remove the plating that holds the diamonds onto the plate (likewise, to the E 1200). Use a DMT C 325 or 120 for lapping and rinse it regularly.Quote:

Search for some of Seraphim's posts (here and at B&B), since he does something similar; only he often finishes up on a surface plate with coated plastic/paper abrasives.
get a second swaty, and rub em together for slurry :)
Ill order chosera 1k soon it comes with a slurry. I need to sell of someday of my heljestrand and Anton bergs first. I have to many...
Glen Do i need a 3 or 5 kr naniwa aswell? I Do have a cheaper 3/8k combo from Taidea
