I'm curious about naniwa stones and how the cut and what would be the best set to get
I like the Naniwa Chosera's. The 1K is an excellent bevel setter. I use this progression.... 1k and 3k Chosera followed by 8k Norton then an Escher finisher. I have the 5k Chosera but haven't had great results with it, the 3k works better for me. The stones cut very smoothly and give good feedback.
Well I have nortons 1k and 4and 8k with a Chinese finisher but I wanted to see if naniwas would be better in long run
I have both the Nortons and the Naniwa Superstones. It really comes down to personal preference. The Naniwa's have a softer feel than the Nortons, alot of people seem to like that. Either will get you to the same place, at least up to 8k. You might want to just add the 12k superstone to your Norton set up. I have used the Nortons followed by the 12k SS and it leaves a really nice edge.
I like 1k chosera, then the rest super stones. You can get 3k, 8k, 12k, or 5k, 8k, 12k either sequence will work equally well.
I just bought a 12k ss. Today I honed a razor using Norton 1k-4k-8k. I then tried the 12k ss, stroped, and shaved. I really like the results. As you imagine the shave is much better than off the Norton 8k alone. The shave is smoother, and my face felt better afterwards. Tomorrow I will try going from the 12k ss to CrOx. I would suggest this stone.
I was just curious if the naniwa stone produce amazing edges by using the whole line cause I'm going to use my Plasma money to get them and I didn't know if I should just get the 12k or just a set
I cant tell the difference in the edge whether I use the Nortons or the Naniwa's before the 12k SS. If you really want them have at it, I did. You could buy just the 12k SS and invest in the 1k Chosera for setting bevels with the 4/8 Nortons in between and have a great set-up.
+1 on the Naniwa 12K SuperStone to follow your Norton 4k/8k combo.
It likes a couple sprays of water as you hone not a big dunk and soak.
Read the Norton 4k/8k thread.... and then the Na12kSS is just smooth gravy.

Some Chinese (12k?) finisher hones are very good. You may wish to try
a bit of yellow 8k (or 4k) slurry from your Norton on your Chinese rock. After
a while it will polish the hone surface and improve the surface finish in some
but not all cases.
Once I bought a Naniwa 12k my Chinese rock has only seen kitchen knives.
I think it is the most available and best value hone in the +10k-14k range.
There is a general consensus that naniwa choseras are some of the nicest feeling with respect to feedback.
Yes,
I agree. You can feel how the stone are cutting the steel.
My Naniwa set is 1, 5, 8, 12K and a laping stone. Earlier I had Chinece 12k, but I did not like it. It is hard and narrow stone, not for the beginner I thought. Then I purchased Naniwa 12K and it is great stone to hone. I have not had much the time to play with it yet, but knifes are quite sharp, not yber sharp yet.
When I get more experience with it, maybe the result will be better.
Does the naniwa 12k give a better mirror finish than
the 8k and 10k?
Sharpman
I do not have a 10k stone, so can not say nothing about it.
No doubt it (12k) gives a better result than a 8k. It just is sharper after 12k.
I have to believe because I was told so. The gurus here in SRP have advised me to get a finishing stone. So I get one, and I am happy with it.
I wouldn't run out and buy a whole set without giving one a try to see how you like the feel. I have the Naniwa 12K superstone and it is a superb finisher, but I initially found the feel a little disconcerting after having used only the much-harder Nortons and coticules.
This didn't stop me buying a 10K superstone and the interesting Naniwa "Snow White" 8K, so apparently I got past my initial impressions pretty fast.
in German, we have the combination SS Superstone 1/5 k, 3/8K, 10k and 400 for breaks in the Razor....maybe a Thuringian for finish. But you need a white clearing stone from nagura
