I picked up a standard grade 6" x 1.5 and I paid around $90 +/-. That was a few years ago as well, they have gone up since. The Norton is 3" x 8" I believe is $79 here at Lee Valley Tools. To get anything close to that size now in a natural combo, you're paying over $200 at least. Now I understand that as a beginner, you can learn to do the X stroke on a smaller stone, but that adds to the learning curve and adds variables that are difficult to help with when giving advice, as well as the points above regarding the unknown grit of each stone.
