Impressive collection Lynn!! Now, if you could only own 3 hones and had to choose from your arsenal, which ones would you choose? For me, I'd take the Chosera 1k on the first table, and on the second table one of the 3" wide coticules, probably the shorter one that looks lighter yellow and is maybe a La Petite Blanche or La Dressante and then for sure the labeled Escher. Which would you guys choose?

    Regards,

    Howard

I'm oddly surprised there's not more, although I can't imagine what more you'd need....

Wow, that Chosera is thin! How many razors has it seen, do you have an estimate about it Lynn?

Considering results, consistency and reliability, I would have to have the Chosera 1K and probably the Norton 4K/8K if I COULD only own 3. I have been having convulsions thinking about which finisher so until they stop, I can't tell you..........

The problem with this kind of question is that The Shapton Glass, Norton and Naniwa Super's are really equal to me from a results standpoint and only differ in the feel and different feedback from each. I personally have not liked the Shapton Pro or Kings and several others nor have I had consistent results with the films. There is so much personal preference involved in this sport and so little difference in outcomes, especially with some of the finishing stones, that it becomes very hard to advise people. When I teach people to hone here, I normally teach them on the Naniwa or Nortons. Sometimes I just teach them on what they want to learn on. The person honing makes as much difference as the tools he is using in my opinion.

    Have fun.

    You noticed eh..........

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 7,000. Tis the thickest of the stones I use. Normally I get about 2,500 out of a Norton 4K before it wears through.

    Have fun.

If I had to hone that many razors I'd take the gas pipe .... Gorgeous collection of hones Lynn. The best part of it is they are going to be used for what they were meant for. Not sitting in a drawer or a cabinet..... like most of mine. ........

There are people that have more for sure.

I started culling them a few years ago. All our kids are out of the house and when we moved, we bought a smaller house, so there simply was not enough room for all my stuff. I have been known to pick up a new hone and experiment with it .........

The other thing is that basically I hone razors 4-6 hours almost every day, so it's really in my best interest to find stones that will produce great results as close to 100 percent of the time and stick with them. It is still fun to be able to try out different stuff and I am lucky to have the opportunity to have a ton of razors to test on at all times. I rarely give an opinion on a stone or method without trying it on dozens or hundreds of razors.

    Have fun.

IMO this is where people don't understand where you're coming from sometimes. It is not that you are knocking naturals, or to be more specific, coticules ..... rather it is that someone who hones on the level that you do needs consistent and repeatable results, along with timely performance.

Between you honing for people who send razors to you, SRD, among other vendors, I know you don't have the time to fool around, unless you just feel like playing with this or that stone, and I know you do when you have the time and the inclination.

It amazes me that it is still a labor of love and a sport for you. Anyway, all I'm getting at is that honing on that professional level needs stones that are easily replaceable, relatively inexpensive (compared to J-nats or y/g eschers) and fast but giving stellar results. The fun stones get used too but I would guess more for personal use ?
