My new-to-me PHIG has long stripes of transluscent brown in it, rather than the small ones I've seen in pictures:

The discoloration at the bottom is just the water soaking in/drying.
Is this unusual?

Looks just like mine. No problem so far, the stripe doesn't seem to effect it.
I am gettin a serious case of HAD :| is that stone used as a finisher?
Yes, its a finisher. If you're going to get a case of HAD, this is the cheapest stone to chase.
It's a gold vein; you've hit the mother load !!! :beer1:
My best finishing PHIG has brownish-orange stripes like that.
There's no need to worry about them at all.
I tried it last night, and other than making scratches (that I couldn't feel) when slurrying, everything went off without a hitch. My shave this morning was definately smoother than before, when the razor was finished on a barber hone.
Nice stone. What method did you use?
