My new coticule/bbw combo...WOW!!!

hey guys,
just wanted to quickly share my new coticule combo. I got it this morning and I am comletly amazed with everything about coticule stones. It is sooo smooth and put such a mirror polish edge on my razor I could not believe it. very fast too with the slurry. I got a slurry stone from classicedge and it raises such a nice creamy slurry so quickly!!! the stone measures 5" long by 2 1/4" wide. the coticule depth is kind of shallow at 8mm. but I think as long as I dont raise to much slurry all the time it should last me quite a while. wouldn't you think? The other side is not slate, it is apparently bbw that was glued to the coticule. it also raises slurry very well and cuts fast too. I am extatic about this stone. It is currently now my favourite finisher. I also posted a J-nat the other day that I got but it is nothing close to as good as this one IMHO. heres a few pics...any comments are more than welcome :) bye for now.

Holy crap, is that ever nice!

That is a good looking Coticule, nice, smooth, even, looks to be a Select Grade with no real inclusions, should last you a lifetime at least, I use the heck outta my Coti and can see no real wear yet....

NIce stone.. I have one but it is narrow, and I haven't been overly successful with it... I am trying to "learn" the stone. I like your's, it looks wide enough to support the blade. Good Honing!

Most times I use the blue and then switch over to the yellow to finish

I'm struggling with a narrow one too - wish I'd gone for mod width and less length...

a bit more muscle control is needed for narrow hones - i find.

I had a hard time keeping the razor from see-sawing on the Nortons at first. It's now harder on a cotcule that's half the width!

Sooner or later you're gonna need the ability to keep that narrow line on a stone. Think wavy blade.

On that jnat - if its a good one, don't ignore it for the coti. Out of about 50 blades, there were only 2 done on the coti I couldn't improve with a jnat. Both work. 'Just takes some time & work to wring out the best from them.

I've done most of the sharpening for the last year on a coti, usually finishing on an asagi. Sometimes going back to a coti or thuringian. Neither has been as smooth as just the asagi.

enjoy your coti. it is very nice looking stone. Are new coticules about 8mm think standard? my vintage is 12mm thick.

thanks so much everyone, It truly is an amazing stone! it is soo smooth and did such an amazing job finishing my razor yesterday. the shave was incredibly close and the edge was ever so smooth and forgiving. This coti is with me for the long run :) I actually found out that most cotis are sold with 8mm depth even when bought new so I guess im good for a lifetime which makes me very happy. I had a great edge from my j-nat as well but it was much much harder to use than the coti. thanks again everyone :)

Learning my asagi wasn't fast (first natural), but was much faster for me than learning the coti. It says nothing about the stones, and says alot for our own compatibility w/ a particular stone or method. There are guys that just do magic w/ a coti (I'm always jealous). For me its different, but the joy from the shave is what counts. In my efforts to conquer the Coti, I've had 4 rocks. I would probably been better off to have 2 jnats - because of that compatibility thing. If you have a natural feel for that rock - don't question it. Go with it. Maybe try some other veins and definitely spend some time on the coticule site. They're a good bunch. We can go arm in arm to the HAD poorhouse. :)

There is no "standard". every vein is a different thickness, and they try to get as much out of every piece as possible. There are coticules with 4mm, and some with 24mm...

Noticed you are selling this one. A little surprising since you seemed to like it so much. I hope the replacement is just as good.

I'd buy it but I need another stone like I need a hole in the head.

lol. I was waiting for someone to say something....I know it is pretty odd to everyone that I am selling it but I have purchased a new coticule that is a little longer which I really wanted. Nice stone, I'd like to see it wet, without slurry. It looks like it might be Lpb, but I'm not sure. Definitely selected grade.
Cotis are a lot of fun once you get the hang of them. They impart a nice smooth edge...Don't rule out your Jnat, It should be able to take your Coti edge up a notch. They are a bit more tempermental ime, but worth it, once you get the hang of them.

If you really want to improve on the coti edge, after finishing as usual, put a few drops of mineral oil on the stone and give it another 50 laps with minimal pressure. The oil washes right off the stone without a hint of it left behind. The edge still maintains the smoothness but with a little extra umph.
