You never know when you might have to set a bevel.
And a travel kit does not have to be large. Here's the full monty: a small Narutaki iro glued up to a piece of King 1k, and the iro is a good razor finisher. Behind botan, ungraded but very fast mejiro-like, and a tomo. Add a strop or strop on your palm and you're good to go.
Cheers, Steve
I use dry box's like these for many things including my shaving kit when traveling.
Flambeau 14" Dry Box
I tend to carry courser hones when traveling because my knife needs sharpening much more often than my razor.
Might need to cave and grab a couple of those pelican cases for the Naturals I picked up. I Kept most of my hones in the plastic cases they were shipped in, or stuffed them in Norton lapping hone cases that were no longer in use. Then they're stacked in an old metal tool box, which is also running out of room.
Good thing about the Pelicans, if it breaks they will probably give you a new one. If you line the Pelican the right way, if you drop it, then your chances are the stone will be O.K.
Yea. This thread has me searching for an adequate foam lined case. Seems like all the deep ones are too large for my needs, and all the shallow ones don't have the width/length I'd need! There's no happy middle ground lol
Get a Pelican slightly larger than your stone,,, then go to Wal Mart in the pillow section & there are large sheets of white foam squares in a packet, cheap & more than you will use. Cut it to fit around your stones.
Yea, I was thinking about checking out Wal Mart to see if they had any acceptable solutions. I saw a few OK looking cases made from Plano tackle caddies I was considering using. Might have to keep an eye out for those foam bits too.
I stopped by Wal-Mart today and checked the pillow section. The only foam they had was the stuff you roll out over your bed. That seemed way too thick. I wandered over to the tool section to see if maybe there was a suitable box, but I didn't much care for what I was seeing. I'm waiting for the battery of my Dremel to charge right now, I got a couple of really cheap tackle cases and I'm in the process of cutting away the plastic dividers to make room for the 8x3 stones:

I should be able to fit 2 of those smaller boxes in my current hone chest. The larger one with the slurry stones is going to have to ride separate I guess. Not half bad for less than $4 a box, and the required modification is minimal.
here is what I was talking about, I got it 4 months ago,,, appears there is no more.

Stone,(coticule)razor,Palmolive, brush.Need to add a slurry stone.
Keep in mind the Home Depot,,, after they unpack major appliances for the floor displays, they toss the remains out back. You can often get the high grade dense Polyurethane Foam there,,, hiding in the boxes.
Just don't get caught after closing behind the Home Depot, the cops ain't gonna believe your hunting for foam.
Ok, the final result of all my tinkering:

The Plano box on the far left has my Guangxi hone, as well as it's slurry stone, and the slurry stones for my Lynn Melynnllyn and Dragon's tongue. To the right of that are my Norton 220/1000 and 4000/8000. Next to that is the Welsh Slate with it's slurry stone, LM hone, and above them the Dragon's Tongue. Everything here accept for the Plano box fits inside the All American tool box behind them.
I got lucky at work today and found an old box for a headlight lens that was stuffed full of that stiff white 1/2" packing foam. Needless to say that came home with me, though I don't have a need for it right this minute.

I realize some of you don't have Gun Stores in your area, but, GUN Stores have cases with the foam already in them for low prices, a shorty GUN container will hold a lot of material for the $$.
Thought about it, but I lost the foam that was in my plastic gun cases...which kind of renders them useless for their intended purpose
My mule would surely balk at such a load as some of you folk carry when a travelin about. Here is my hillbilly padded hone travel kit. I am still trying to iron out the particulars cus the sock don't come with no instructions.

Unless you are taking razors which need honing, why would you want to take hones as-traveling?
I figure a few shavers and a strop would last a year or two! :D
Haha, love it! Got a few pocket knife hones I wrap in a dishrag. My setup is more for around the house storage and movement. Doubt I'll ever have a need to actually travel with any of them lol.
Well, now I'm gonna need a hone case, my Barber says he want's to learn how to hone a straight razor as that was Not taught at barber college.
Though I'm not a Master honer of razors and am self taught in most things, would like to see the honing art passed on.
This founds reafonable! Beft luck! Teaching a barber to hone founds like fun! :tu
Hirlau hauls a few hones at times! Just saying! :roflmao
Hey !!! What's up with dat ???
Here's a little bump for a fun thread;
The other day I went into Costco looking for some pillows & left with this nice little cart for my hones, only $29.00. I don't hone that often, but got tired of my hones dispersed throughout the kitchen. So I made an M.H.C.( Mobile Honing Cart); that way I can have everything together should I want to hone in front of the TV or in the kitchen.
The hones on the cart are just the hones in my rotation for razors & knives.
Thanks for looking,,,,,,:D

Gee, I hope I never need that many rocks to get a razor shave ready.
That's a nice set up John! A little too much for me, but looks very well organized.
What's the lighter fluid for?
Very good. I thought you may have a trick of the trade using lighter fluid. Are you planning on hanging your strops on the sides?
No, they stay in the bathroom.
Cool set up John and a nice collection.
