Anybody know what kind of stone this is? I bought it about 40 years ago. Got a bad memory. Anybody know if the light side of this stone would be appropriate for using on a razor? Approximate grit size? Thanks for any help.

I think it's one of those invisible stones they used to make. They're pretty hard to hone on.
It looks to be a natural coti and belgian blue stone i love mine and they are great for razors use the blue side first after you have got your bevel sorted and then go to the light side ,you will find plenty of info on how to use them here cheers.
Shame that there is only one picture. It does look like Coti on one side.

Ok its not a natural but i still think coti and so the base is bbw or slate if its slate you cant use it on your razor .Do a test and see if you can raise a slurry on both sides the creamy white side should make a nice creamy slurry fairly easy the other darker side if its bbw should make a pinkish slurry.

Not every slate they used for backing can not be used for straights. First test and then decide. Mu gut feeling says that you have decent hone.
If the stone is 40 years old, than I am fairly positive that it will have a bbw backing, IF it is a coti. It looks like one, but I have seen some synth combination stones that looked deceivingly like cotis.Quote:

They sell 3 sizes, the number six is 115x60 mm. Would that be the size of your stone?
I have been told it is a natural sharpening stone, coarser than the coticule.
The water test is my usual go to method. If I 'm still uncertain it's the 'tongue' . That one usually places it for me.Quote:

Yes, it soaks up water. When I wet the light side, the water disappears in 10-20 seconds, and I must then wet it again.Quote:

Than its a synth fine hone, glued to slate. I bought one like that too, thinking it is a coticule. Mine wasn't the best for straights, it was around 4-6k in fineness.Quote:
