Could this be used instead of a DMT 8C?

I was wondering what peoples thoughts were on using this: NEW 2.4 Kg SMOOTH BLACK MARBLE CHOPPING BLOCK High Quality Chefs Cutting Board | eBay with wet and dry as an alternative to a DMT 8C as it would work out at around 1/3rd of the price of buying a DMT.

Would it be flat enough to use?

Do you mean as a flat surface to lay sandpaper on to lap or to hone ? I've read that guys go to Home Depot and get a ceramic or marble tile with good results. Considerably less $ but sandpaper ain't cheap. That will add up over time to where a plate may be more cost effective ? I guess it depends on how often you're going to use it.

what? do you want a marble flat surface only or do you want to hone/sharpen stuff with DMT 8x3 inch? Or do you want to use the marble plate and sandpaper instead of DMT 8x3 inch? if your going to use sandpaper you can buy glass/window that fit your needs dont need marble to have your sandpaper on.

Yep, that's exactly what I mean.

I'd not thought of using a tile though.

I won't be lappng a hone that often and can't really justify the outlay of £60 (which is the cheapest I can get one for in the UK) for a DMT.

Wouldn't the glass be too fragile to use compared to the marble though?

I've yet to break a glass plate during lapping and I've lapped a lot.

After doing some searching on the forum the tile idea, I think this will be the way forward for me.

I found a particularly useful thread on using granite tiles instead of marble and a quick internet search of my local tile store shows that they have some individual granite tiles available as part of a sale so this will make it even cheaper - result. :)

Before you run and part with the cash search if you do not have any custom kitchen work tops maker around often nthey have in scrap bin sizes big enough for you to use and most of the times they are free just worth asking.

I have lapped literally hundreds of hones on glass, and without going to the expense of buying fragile sandpaper - I use lapidary grit instead. Dishes the glass after sometime, so I'm thinking of getting a cast-iron 'surface plate' instead - if I can find one cheap enough! Knowing my luck, though, it will dish faster than the glass!

That is the reaso why I did not use mine and lately you can get wide linisher belts of decent quality dirt cheap.
