BBW maybe? No idea....

my parents picked this up at an antique store in central Michigan. They came to visit and brought it with them last week. Just got around to lapping it.

It's interesting looking...I've never seen a BBW in person, and no pictures I've seen really look like this.

The slurry comes easily and smells of iron.

Lapped at 600 grit, it's slightly less smooth than my thuringian.

I'm not sure you can completely tell from the pictures, but it's not homogeneous, nor is it striated.

looks like an Escher..maybe?

Definitely not a BBW, but I don't know what it might be.

Well, by escher, I'm guessing you mean thuringian?

I had said the slurry was different, but upon a closer look, I have determined that the slurry is very similar, yet it does smell quite different from my thuri. The thuri has an earthy smell to it, where as this other one smells like a penny.

Sure thing. What about the stone looks synthetic to you? It doesn't look homogeneous enough to be a man made to me. Too many inclusions. I've got several SiC hones, and none of them look or feel like this one.

In my mind, it feels like SiC. That's exactly what I thought it was. Best thing to do is ... hone with it see where it fits then let us know what grit you think it is :) I hope it is a high end stone!

Was it hard to lap it? Did you lap it with diamond plate? I have one favorit guess but that one is not soft at all.

Well, it lapped much more easily than any of my SiC stones, and I checked grits with my teeth compared to my highest grit SiC hones, and it's much finer, but still not as fine as my thuri. I lapped about 1mm off it with 400 grit sandpaper within about 5 minutes. As a comparison, I have a carborundum that's about the same size and it took me 3 hours to lap roughly the same amount of material, and I stated with valve grinding compound on that one.

On the side of the stone, where I've sanded off the black patina, there is a slight grain pattern. Is there any synthetic stone you can show me that not only isn't homogeneous but also has a grain pattern? I'm not doubting that it may be, but I don't have a lot of experience and would like to know what type of synthetic it is.

I'll try to add it in my progression next weekend. It feels somewhere in the 12k grit rating to me, as it's far finer than any of my barber hones.
