Any experience with these hones?

Looking to build my first hone progression and I have already gotten a naniwa ss1k for bevel setting, now I am looking into my intermediate stones. So far these seem the direction I am leaning:
Suehiro rika 5k Suehiro Rika 5000 Grit Stone

Naniwa snow white 8k Naniwa Snow White 8k

I would love to get a JNat, or choceras, but are just out of my wallets reach as of now. Any advice or info on these would be great. There is plenty of reviews on the knife forums, but none on the SR 5k for straights, which is apples and oranges as far as honing and edge quality goes. :shrug:

In that range I would highly recommend my daily driver, the workhorse of SRP before the advent of the exotic plethora of hones now available, the tried and still true .... Norton 4&8. Seems boring like vanilla and chocolate but it is comparatively cheap, readily available domestically and delivers the goods. I have the single grit 1" thick 8x3" stones.

I had almost forgotten about those :gaah:. You get so much info on all these different hones, and it's just overwhelming at times. Thanks alot for the reminder; I will have to check into those again. I know those are Lynn's staple for alot of his work, and he praises them a good bit in his dvd I checked out.

This seems an appropriate thread to remind members of Occam's Razor: shave off the unnecessary parts of any explanation as long as it adequately does the job. This is not to be confused with the KISS principle.

Though I should have considered the KISS principle as well.

norton 4/8k thats the best route since you have a 1k. i have the naniwa snow white stone i like the norton 8k feel(while honing) better then the snow white stone. but the snow white gives a little bit better edge ime.

The snow white hone is a very well thought of stone in japan for tools. It might be a bit harder than the norton, I wish I could say I've tried it but I just had and dumped a chosera 10k and didn't have reason to get the snow white.

I know which of those two I'd buy, but I have a bias toward stones that work well with tools, too.
