Edit: off topic reply irrelevant now anyway.
I'm scratching my head now. Can anyone explain why a couple of manganese spots on a coticule would make it faster than usual ?
I was wondering the same thing. I am playing with it and another coti and there is a difference. I would say the spotted one feels more like a thury. Where my normal, coti feels more like an an Arkansas stone, Of course not that dramatic, but that's the ony way I can describe it.
Would that be the description of "faster". ?
The fact there manganese in the rock means
that's it's finer then other stones.
it's a high class coticule.

I was wondering about that "faster" claim also.
Most coticules are known for their garnet content and Salm coticules seem to be known for their manganese content as far as I know. This would be a good thread for pointing out some of the differences in coticules.

So some area of the razor would be sharper then others?
To be more specific how does the presence of manganese influence the size of the garnet crystals.
I can't answer Martin or Oz. I only know that I have an 8x3 coti with next to no garnet content and the stone is basically useless. I also have a 6x2 with considerable garnet content and it cuts steel like a bandit.
I also know that the manganese in a Salm coti is softer than the stone itself and the manganese wears away at about the same rate as the rest of the stone. Salms yield a finer edge than a regular coti.
We need clarification by someone who knows Cotis better than the rest of us.
