Proving my Ignorance

Someone please explain why almost all the Coticule I have seen posted in the classified section here and on other websites share a unique shape? I think it is a rather handsome shape, if one could be so bold as to describe a piece of stone in such a manner.
If someone were to twist my arm and force me to make a SWAG (Sophisticated Wild A$$ed Guess) about the design, I would tell him it would soley for ergonomics, so the honer is at ease while putting the final stone touches on his razor. That being said, sure as I'm sittin' here on this hot summer night, someone will reply before tomorrow night letting me know that my SWAG was so far off base it was out of the park. :roflmao And when he stops acting like my little friend to the left is doing, he'll let me off the hook and tell me why the coticule stones have the peculiar 5-sided design.

I am not exactly sure what shape you are referring to. You often see coticule bouts - weird-shaped off-cut looking bits that often sell for cheaper. I believe they are the shape they are because they are the "trimmings" from more regularly cut stones, or else end up that way after the quarry removes the miscellaneous dribs and drabs of other "non-coticule" rock that is pulled out when being mined.

However, it is also not uncommon to see what appears to be a regular-shaped natural stone that would be essentially perfectly rectangular apart from a corner triangle that seems to have been "snipped" off, perhaps even on a couple of the corners, not just one. Some of my Jnats display this shape, for example. I believe it has to do with extracting a clean and uniform piece of hone from a larger quarried rock. It could also sometimes have to do with taking off an edge for a rubbing stone, but I think that is less common.
