I've got an Ahconite Barber's Hone. I used it to sharpen the first razor I ever honed. I set the bevel with the gritty side and finished it on the slick side. The edge is U-G-L-Y compared to edges I get off my Japanese synthetics. It is a great shaver though.
I'm thinking it's around 8K if that means anything. It will refresh an edge PDQ. I just tuned up a Robeson on it using lather. About 10 strokes and a stropping and it's tree topping the hair on my arm now.

Ahconite Barbers Hone
Just reading past notes on barber hones. The only two ways that I've been able to differentiate grit has been: 1 the way they soak up water, and 2 the old "tongue trick". Of the 2 the tongue is the best gauge.
