Hard to say. From my experience a lot of these companies just ship in already made material from China as it is much cheaper for them then to quarry and dress their own material.

Norton Water Stones - Lee Valley Tools
LOL yeah, and do you see the price?? If I can take a 10 minute drive and hunt for them in the woods or on the shore of the bay, it'll be a lot cheaper :)
I already found one piece of slateish material that took a dulled blade and got it cutting hair but i need to borrow my buddies belt sander to make it somewhat flat and a better shape! I'm determined to find something that works :)
Slate is really common stuff. These rock places charge because of the labor in making roofing tiles out of them or just as a handling fee. Slate is easy to get flat because it has really perfect cleavage. It has layers and the layers break clean. Just a hammer and chisel on the side and you have a nice flat piece.
So, I guess one of the questions I have is what makes the welsh slate hones particularly great? or Eschers/Thuringians for that matter? They are all the same type of metamorphic material no? All with varying quantities and particulate size of quartz/iron oxide
