Hello All,
I just recently puchased this old Norton hone for 10 bucks on Ebay, in hopes that it may be a decent razor Hone. It has 2 sides as you can see, but I can't tell what the grit ratings are (maybe 220-1000?) Can anyone help to tell me what I have here?
ps-it smells like it may or may not have been used w/oil, so is there ANY hope at all that I can hit it with my DMT 120 & salvage it?? Thx for the help!

Top side is India, IMO. I suppose the bottom is a finer variant? Oilstone, low grit, for knives, I think. You might use it for low grit usage on a razor. It looks in good condition. You might use up a DMT on it. I would use a flattening stone as much as possible before going to a DMT!
Use some simple green to clean the outside. The stone is impregnated at the factory with a petroleum based product to assist in honing. It is not meant to be oil free & removing the oil is next to impossible. I great hone for knives & axes, the stone is more than likely Crystolon/India Combination, Medium /Fine, grey /brown in color, grit 220/1000. But having read the charts & several Nortons on hand, I find it hard to put the fine side at 1000. It actually feels 800 at best.Maybe I'm spoiled with the feel of my Norton 1000
I would not use this stone on my razors. $10.00 is a good price, but not a steal.
same stone i bought when i was in my carpentry apprenticeship 25 years ago ... good stone for plane irons and chisels ...not so much for razors ... keep it around for your tools and pocket knives.
