Advice needed - Barbers hone

Hi chaps,

Well i received my 1st hone through the post this week (after waiting for 4 weeks which seemed more like 4 years). I purchased via ebay and i went for a barbers hone as i want to maintain the edge (All new purchases or major issues will be sent to someone who knows what they are doing!!!).

The seller advised that the hone hasnt had much use. As ive nothing to compare the quality of my hone to or experience in using a hone i thought id ask what you guys think and if you can give me any tips. Id really appreciate your input.

Just been looking at the pictures that i have posted and there appears to be some red blotches on the actual stone. Is this normal colouration?

:shrug: the blotches might be something that was used in the past..

I would not Lap a BH unless there is a visible problem, try a Dishwashing Green scratch pad and some Dishwashing soap to clean it up a bit and see what stays and what goes first..

If you just dip the hone in plain water and watch the way it reacts to the surafce of the hone it might tell you about what was used in the past, there are Knife & Tool guys that use Diesel to hone which over here is sometimes dyed red.. I have also heard of people using Kerosene and Automatic Transmission Fluid as a honing fluid...

Smell the hone too, that might give a clue

Well i have finally built up the courage to use my barbers hone and my god its good! Its brought that edge right back.

That's a beautiful hone, the finish is different than a lot of barber hones, the case is a plus too.
I have one, but not the condition of yours.

Oh my! I hope I never have to use anything other than a traditional barber hone for the rest of my life. Please don't post anymore. Barber hones remain the last bastion of true quality around and most of the guys on this forum are lost in the low quality modern crap! That is a beautiful hone.

Once again, please stop telling people how great it is, there too hard to find as it is! ;)

i got a couple lil barber hones...they are awesome...yours looks very nice. deffinatly in the 8k+ range
