Pretty interesting about the hickory wood hones. It must have been a relatively quick permineralization loading the wood with silica absorbed from the clay.
Here is an example of this type of hone, recently acquired from the 'bay.

It's hard to say where the hone ends and the wood begins, absolutely awesome!
Yes, I used it once. I honed on synthetics through 12K, then finished on this hone. It is very slow, and its small size doesn't help matters. I did somewhere between 75-100 laps (didn't count). It's similar to finishing on CrOx pasted balsa. It left the edge more polished, but left that synthetic "harshness". I think that the edge from a natural prior to this hone would be much more comfortable, but I haven't had a chance to test this theory yet.
