As for the small 5x1 size thuringians, I too use a heal first swooping style x-stroke covering the entire length of the blade in one stoke. I Begin each stroke with the blade at about a 45 degree angle, which puts the heal first and allows for more blade to be in contact with the stone during the first part of the stroke and also requires less hand movement due to swooping technique. I find it easier to be consistent that way. However, I do use other methods a good bit too depending on the blade. Practice is the key, see which method works best for you, don't be set on what others say is best.
