Every honing veteran that I know of ends up with a Chosera 1K & keeps it. I'm a huge Shapton GS fan, but I set razor bevels on Chosera 1K and then progress on the GS's to 16K.
Edit: I finish on a natural though, but that's a preference thing.

I have a 16k on the way, but I am afraid I will end up buying everything between it and my 1k Chosera.
You more than likely will, I have 220-30K...great stones, but not what I recommend for a beginner. Once I learned the stones, they became my favorites and I got rid of most of my other synthetics...except for my chosera 1K.
I have bought about everything I can think of, the GS stones are the only exception. (all Nortons, Naniwa SS and Chosera, Shapton pros, DMT from 220 to 8k, cotis, Jnats, etc.) For the last 100 or so razors I have used my 1k Chosera, 5k Chosera, 8k Norton, and 12k Naniwa SS about exclusively, and I was fairly happy with it. My only problem was the 12k with the constant warping, but I didn't know what else to use. A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to use the 16k GS, and I fell in love with it. I have one already in the post, and now I am in fear that I will buy at least the 4k and 8k too, and also the 2k in the worst case scenario.
Hey Frank,
I'm another that has the whole set of Shaptons and use them all the time, great stones, but when it comes to bevel setting I wouldn't trade my 1k Chosera for any other stone. :D
