    Default Advice on Norton hones

My fiancé got me A Norton hone set off amazon (SRD was out of stock). The delivery guy just threw the package into the driveway and this happened: Name: ImageUploadedByTapatalk1357542040.493396.jpg

Needless to say I was pretty bummed out. I'm sending them back to have them replaced.
I assume this damage would be very problematic during honing (assuming I used the entire hone). I wanted to ask you all what could be done if I wasn't able to have them replaced? Could that be fixed? Would you just not use those areas of the hone? Also is the Norton lapping stone sufficient for flattening the hones for straight razors?

    Thanks,
    D

You might have more success through the post office, if you saw this happen.
or take it , plus the wrapping to the post office.
Maybe the vendor or Amazon can help.
Make some calls first to the vendor & Amazon, write contacts down, ; approach the post office too.
A PITA , I know, but you deserve a good piece of equipment.

The Norton lapping stone will be fine, I have heard???? I lap with a DMT.

**************I just noticed, both stones damaged !! I would be P***ed, I would make the call. sorry to hear this *******

I would definitely get those replaced. You paid good money for them and they should be perfect. Now having said that, I don't think those nicks on the edges of the hones would be any problem at all. Once you lap and round off the edges I don't think they would matter.

Unless you had it insured, the post office is not likely to do diddly squat other than to say "it was not packaged properly"
Which may well be the case! There should have been cushion between each stone, as well as cushion between the stones and the edges of the box.
I would complain to the vendor saying only "stones arrived damaged" no more, no less. Its not your job to explain why you should be refunded/replaced.
They arrived damaged, and you would like replacements or a refund. They may refuse unless you return the stones, but I would want perfect stones, not to mention an unbroken storage container.

Thanks This is what I was wondering about. Every side of the stones has about a 1-2mm chip/s so it seems like it would be a lot to lap but I've never done it before.

    H,
Do you use multiple, like a 120 & 325 or something similar? I think I remember seeing Gssixgun use two different DMTs.
    Thanks again!

I use a DMT 120 for initial lapping as it is quicker, but it's not necessary. You can use a 325 for the entire process, just takes a little longer.

DMT 120's are expensive though. I bought one thinking I'd get a lot of use out of it, but I hardly use the thing. My 325 gets a LOT of use, though..

If I remember Glen's video correctly he uses a 120 in one of his videos, but talks about using his 325 often.
I use the 325 for most everything, I ended up getting 2 of them, one only touches my water stones; the other, Carborundums, barber hones, etc.....

Sweet! Thanks for the help gentlemen. I'll be back for more when I get ready to hone. I've done a lot of research and think I'm ready to take the plunge...slowly.

    Default Advice on Norton hones

So finally got my hones this weekend. They were ok this time. I lapped them up using the norton lapping stone. 4k went smooth, 8k was tough.

Touched up my Dovo. It was my first time honing but thanks to Lynn, Glen, and Charlie I was able to get it back into shaving shape. It's not as sharp as it was when it came from SRD (aka it didn't pass the hanging hair test) but it still shaved well after stropping.

Here's to learning new skills and to everyone who helped.
    Cheers,
    D
