I took a punt on this vintage Norton oil stone, no real info just a few pictures, well I made him a very low offer and he accepted, right the hone is very fine which is a good thing for me, but I have no idea what grit rating the stone is? it feels around 1K but I'm just not sure, I can just make out the words on the side which say Norton finest, now the stone is in super condition and as flat as a pool table, I'm wondering if you can give me any info on the rating of this stone.

The standard rating applied is 1200 grit. I had some successes using one of these as a bevel setter, but it's been a year or more ago. I stopped using it for razors fairly fast. Not that it can't be used in the lower grit ranges, so much as the waterstones are just a little easier to deal with. No oil to clean up, and easier to clean later.

Thanks 1200 does seem about right, the stone itself is incredibly hard, I'll give it a go to see what kind of results I get.
