Re-thread Frictionite 00

Please bear with me, I've lurked here for two years and finally decided to post. Its time to add to the community.


I've seen a thread dedicated to this little green fella a few times but I think its pretty buried. Recently I received a small treasure trove of hones, razors, shears, strops etc. My father is an old school barber and passed down all of his old gear he no longer uses. Amongst the items was an old Frictionite 00 and I know its a good stone but can't for the life of me remember what the grit size was.... any one have a good idea? And is it a good hone for you?

I don't know the grit size but it is a favorite of many razor honers. Ask your dad what he thought of it and how he used it. If you do a search for it on ebay and check out 'sold items' you'll be surprised at how much they bring. Especially the old ones with the green pouch.

Thanks for the suggestions. My ol dad uses a very strange honing technique with that stone. It seems to have done him right but I can't reproduce that technique yet. It came in a green pouch. Dad says he has three or four more but can't find them :(

The Frictionite 00 hone is an awesome hone, it is the best finisher I use. I like to hone with it using a small amount of water. The Frictionite hone is a very fast finisher and it is a high grit hone( 14k-16k). This hone will make any razor a good razor if used in good progression! Good Luck and happy honing and shaving.

Thanks guys! Looking forward to having a go. I have heard a few people say they regret lapping this hone. Any recommendations on whether or not to lap?

Once you lap it you can't put the layer back. Try it as is and if you feel you need to lap it do it then. I don't lap barber hones anymore unless it is necessary. I use a nylon fingernail brush and clean them, give it a try. If it needs lapping then I lap it. IMHO. :)

A very knowledgeable gentleman told me that the bottom side of a OO is 4k to 6k and the top side is 12k or slightly higher.

However there may be OO hones that were manufactured in different time periods and the grit rating may vary accordingly.

One thing I have found with my OO is that it is a very aggressive stone and I limit myself to 6 finish laps on most razors. Experiment with your stone until you are satisfied with the number of strokes you need.

It's kind of a mix between figure 8s, circles and finished with wide arcs all at the same time. Like he has combined three techniques into one. I think it's strange but it works for him.

Weird. I do the same thing!

Ha! Just go to prove that you don't need to be strict sometimes! If it gets your blade sharp, then it's the right way for you.
