King Ice Bear 1200 as a bevel setter?

I'm in the process of ordering 3 stones dedicated to razor maintenance.

Already decided on the Norton 4/8k. I hope it comes ready to use and that I don't need to flatten it?

Now I'm torn between the Norton 1k and the King 1200 that I found at 1/2 the price of the Norton.
It's quite a larger stone at 207x66x34mm.
Has any one used this King for bevel setting?

The final stone will be a purple or dark green Welsh stone from AJ...
Yet to decide. Is this third stone needed at all? Advise please :)

I only own the 1k king stone, not the 1k norton, and I find it to be a good stone for setting bevels on.

The 4k/8k norton is a great stone.

As to the third stone it is not needed. You should be able to shave off the 8k side of the norton.

Even if you buy the finishing stone I would recommend putting it away till you get great shaves off the norton.

I use a king 1k for bevel setting also.. But after playinng with different stones over the years i am currently usng the 1k for bevel, 4k, 8k Sapton for setting the edge, andd a coticule for finishing.. I have a 16k shapton but i like the buttery edge of the coticule better.. I also have a thuringun buy find that to put a crisper edge than i care for.

I have this exact same stone but in the 1000 form. I find it to be a bit slow sometimes so I raise slurry which helps speed things up a bit. Im looking at getting a 700k stone for damaged edges. I only use vintage blades which usually means the blade edge has minor chips and dings in it when I find them. This means the bevel setting process can be longer to get that edge, chip free. All in all, I like my king. They're good stones for the price.

I had the king 1k and the norton 1k. I recently purchased a dmt extra fine 1200 grit. Much faster for me, no lapping or hollowing of the stone. Just have to break it in with a big screwdriver to smooth it out a little. Im sold on it. I have the naniwa 12k and find it is excellent. I havent tried any other finisher so you got me there.

By the way, you will need to flatten the 4\8 when you receive it. Just use some 400 grit wet/dry sand paper on a real nice flat surface like your wifes glass top stove.:p

Yes.The grit is extra fine but I have the smaller one you can get at amazon. It is about 6" x 2". That would be the D6E. You might be better off with the wider one if you are learning to hone.

- king 1200
- norton 1000
- dmt x fine 6"
- dmt x fine 8"

king cheap, norton good, dmt practical but 8" kinda expensive

Any one will do the job. Get the king and when you buy the dmt you will say i shoulda got it from the beginning. LOL. At least they dont have an expiration date.

bigger dimensions and cheaper than the 1K ( in the uk anyhow )
as honing is new to me I guess the wider the stone the better although I will still use x strokes
tempted by the 6" dmt but it seems norton 1k is the most popular...

i grabbed a 800 to use as my chip workhorse ..lol... ive been happy with it so har , only dislike i have and it is personal is these king stones are thirsty !!!! mine drys up quick and am adding water non stop it seems , even after a long stroke !!

to answer your ? on the 1200 king !! i dont know why you couldnt use it for bevels !! most people use a 1k stone but you might just need a bit more circles or strokes but results should be similar , its price and convenience vs how you wanna handle it ... as Glen posted each stone is different .. i use a nani1k cause i needed a bevel setter and wish i would have waited and went with a Chosera 1k ...

Lower grit stones need lots of water and lapping. I first used a 220k Norton to take out chips. What a pain, now I use a 325 dmt(that I use to lap my stones) then I use the 600 grit(fine ) dmt then the 1200 dmt(extra fine). Nice and easy, a drop of dish soap and water. No lapping. It takes longer to lap than hone at that grit. 220 dishes out like crazy, and the 1k king and Norton also. If I didn't know better I would say that's the way it is. And what is your time worth? I have heard of guys honing chips out with a 4k for 3 days because they didn't want to buy a dmt or 1k stone. Go the route and you are DONE. You will not have to buy it again.
