One flattening stone for all?

New guy here... Been shaving d/e for awhile and recently ordered my 1st straight razor. As it is truly shave ready, all I will be doing to it is stropping for now; although I do want to learn to hone- just not on my new, professionally sharpened Dovo.

I plan on learning to hone on an older vintage blade or two, working up to maybe setting the 1st bevel on a new "factory" edge before screwing up the edge on my new 1st shaver...

Anyway, I plan to get a Norton 4k/8k combo and a Naniwa 12k and maybe an extra bench strop for chromium oxide or diamond spray...

Finally, my question...
Can i use the same flattening stone on the 12k Naniwa as the Norton or should they be separate?

There is no reason against it. Just remember to clean it between hones to avoid contamination. Many people here use DMT plates.

I agree with adrspach - I've been using a diamond plate to lap pretty much all my hones for a while now. Seems to be going OK so far.

I have the Shapton Steel Plate and add grit to suit what I want to do to the stone. it works for all stones. of course it is not really a stone.

DMT D8C 325 grit here. Works well.

Are you flattening or lapping ? eg a faulty Norton that needs 1/8" or more removed would need a coarser medium than something for everyday use, if time is an issue.
If you'r not honing often. a flat surface & a variety of wetndri papers could serve you but a lot of us use diamond plates like the DMT or Atoma.

+1. Great for lapping and knife sharpening too. They're fairly cheap as well, so a good value overall.

Well I already own a DMT 8" coarse but its the style with the un-perforated end zone area... Probably not ideal. I only expect to need to do upkeep on a yet to be acquired stones...

I'd say get one of these for each hone

Just to be on the safe side...
I also advice to always wear a helmet when walking on pavement!

No, seriously, just clean it of.
Some stones can be quite sticky and leave a residue on the plate,
I get it off with a plastic scraper and some detergent.

I hope your using a face shield, gloves, and rain gear when you do that.

Sounds like 'one ring for all'. We know what that led to-3 uber-long movies about hobbits and rabbit stew. Thank goodness for Aerosmith's girl, that would have been strange. What was with all the fainting?

Went with a DMT D8C 325... Thx...

I use a DMT 325 but am still new at learning all the skills that go along with straight razor shaving. Stick with it, it only gets better.
