Hi folks, I picked these hones up at flea markets. Opinions are welcomed as to what type of hones they are. I suspect the first one is a Charnley Forest but no idea on the second one.
Both were used with oil.
The first one seems to be old, is very dirty and oily and seems to be from a tradesman's kit. The box lid and bottom is stamped with the name "A.MEGHEE"

Yep, CF and LI. Nice score!
I would third it. Check the LI if it does not have toxic inclusion in that white streak.
Ok let me explain something.. When you title a thread "More hones to ID" my first thought was cool more hones to Idaho (ID) I was rather disapointed to read that all you wanted was to know what they were :( and that there were no new hones coming here :p
gssixgun, interesting you said that, as these hones are of British origin they obviously came with the British colonists probably some time during the 1800's, same as your country but earlier in history...so you probably have got a fair share of these type of hones.Quote:

About the inclusion in LI. There is lengthwise line with white color. It could be containing silica crystals which are common in that part of mountains. These crystals can mess up with honing.
I'm curious about the "toxic inclusion" as well.
Perhaps I was not clear enough. Inclusion which mess with the grit (meaning make hone inconsistent throughout its honing surface) If they are finer and softer than the hone itself that is not that big problem. However when it becomes problem is when they are of lower grit or harder than hone itself. Their "toxicity " comes to play when they mess up (spoil) the work you trying to do for example make deep scratches, rip your edge. This often can be sand inclusions and others.
Nice a charney forest hone is the Green one with the red lines.
I only have two Cfs.
adrspach, I get what you mean now. I checked the inclusion by running a sharpened point of an awl back and forth over the inclusion to see if the point caught or dug in. I did this along the length of the inclusion and I was pleased the point ran over it without stalling.Quote:

I dont always find something worth buying but thats luck.
