Here is everything you'd want to know if you were afraid to ask .....

It's probably cheaper from the Polish ebay seller.
I guess I'm curious what goes into the thinking about having a 'natural' finisher.
That particular stone - like any other natural - is going to vary in suitability for razors from horrid to wonderful. IIRC, the honorable sixgunner had to buy 4 before getting one that satisfied.
Mine's middle of the road, though it has most of the veining thought to be preferred. There's nothing it does as well as a Nani 12k.
I'm betting there's 20-50 guys here that have a similar experience. If your heart is set on it - nothing else will do. But otherwise, sixgunner's wonderful description that synthetics are a science, naturals are a romance (with all the ups and downs) has proven very true.
Who determined that the C12K is 12k? I have a couple, are good stones but the need in me to be exact made me get a 12K shapton pro.
Never use the naturals anymore at the 12K level.
i ordered the three welsh stone set in the end off ebay. pinklather i am ofcourse a romantic. thankyou to whisker harvest.
I've had 2. Sold one. I use the second one to act as a base for other stones. I admire the way senior members are lining up to reply , though. Thanks applied.
At the time they first came out, 12k was a popular finishing grit, I would say,,,
I think the boys in Guangxi would have stamped it 30k, had that been the grit of the week. Attachment 130123
Yeah, they seem to be falling from favor. All the cool kids are now getting ZuluGreys and Nani12's.
Now I feel like Eddie Murphy with the homemade hamburger-sigh.
For the price you will be very happy. They are great hones and they don't break the bank!
Let us know how the honing goes once you receive them.
Best,
I still enjoy mine, but I have been dating a Zulu Grey lately, it's on loan, but I may have to get me one in January.
In my opinion it was a waste of money, I would get a finisher from the classifieds here rather than trying to sort through 3-4 of these.
Order 4, and Return 3.
It's not as bad as that. I bought 4 of them, 5 if we ad the kajima stone, that I suspect it's a variety of C12k. And from those, I really like the edge of 3 of them, or 4 with the last one. And the "bad" one I got, it's still a fine stone.
It's not as bad as some make it sound like. Buy one and give it a try.
I own one, only hone I have ever purchased thus far, and I love it. Keeps my blades shave-ready, which is all I need right now. I got mine from WhippedDog.com, btw.
The thing about honing and stones is that you should try EVERYTHING and figure out what you like and what works for you. That may not be possible with stones like jnats or vintage Thuringians because of cost, but it's completely possible with the chinese waterstones. See if you like it. If you don't, sell it to someone who will or who is curious.
I have one (also on loan) but bought it from a friend and so it was a proven stone. It's on loan to someone right now, but I used it for finishing after my coti's. Took 12 strong men to get a slurry going on it and I never stopped before 100 laps, but it always took the edge up a notch.
+1 on the Zulu Grey. I don't feel like wasting money on a Chinese 12k if so many people feel it is a hit or miss stone. The Naniwa is a nice stone and relatively cheap compared to other options, but it is not a natural... I am using the Naniwa 12k SS with CrOx as my finisher now, but waiting for my Zulu to come in.
