Hey guys, for those of us who use naniwa 12k stone, what do you do to a razor afterwards? It'd be interesting to see the replies and then make a survey.
i, for example just strop the razor and shave with it. Usually shaves great! Some people do stripping on a diamond pasted strop some go for even finer grit.
what do you do?
I have a naniwa 12 but I find 1 micron lapping film finishes better (on a granite surface plate,)then .3 micron film then crox on linen. 50 on leather. I have used .25 dia spray on felt hanging and paddle and on balsa. I'm not saying not to use the 12 k, I just prefer the film.YMMV.
Most of my blades are the Naniwa 12k, strop linen/leather and go.
A few of my wedges I hit 5-7 passes on a paddle with CrOx, then linen, leather and go.
Razors do shave great after the Nani 12k and some good stropping. Generally now! On blades with particularly hard steel I go 5 laps on balsa with .25 diamond, 20 on Croox on suspended balsa after the 12k followed by the leather.
On old English or German blades, I go a bit on 12k and a lot of Escher blue/green followed by croox and stropped good.
Most 20th century blades respond perfectly with the 12k and stropping alone. It gets so you can tell what is required as one passes the 4k range. They all are, of course, all different!
Until you have honed all types several times, You won't see. Sticking to your favorite type of razor (grind/size) will bring you closer to success quickly instead of dealing with the other, many variations.

My blades off the 12k Nani get 5-6 passes on croox, and then a decent amount of stropping. more then my normal stropping routine. My last razor I honed, a big 15/16's Wostenholm, with my normal progression was weird. the blade left a lot of swarf on every stone I used, including the 12k Nani. Almost like I was taking charcoal and drawing lines one my stones. Usually If this happens on my 8k I jump back to my 4k but the results were the same over and over again. When I got to my Nani 12k it was still doing the same. The steel seemed very soft. I finished it my usual way anyways, and the edge turned out to be really nice. Unlike my J.R. Torrey thats super hard and I didn't even see any swarf when honing. Just goes to show how different razors react differently to the hones. I do love the edges I get off my 12k Nani!!!:)
It's all about what you have experienced. The Naniwa 12K produces a very sturdy, shavable and smooth edge. If you stopped there you would be at a very fine place. There are some things (both nostalgic naturals or the non-nostalgic mediums) out there that can improve it further but they will in my experience only improve the edge slightly. But that 'slightly' sure is a lot of fun for a lot of us here.
I usually go from the Naniwa 12k to a strop made of pvc-covered fabric which works very well for taking the harshness off an edge, then my normal linen/leather strop. Recently I've been experimenting with crox on balsa before the pvc strop, but I haven't noticed it making any difference.
Pasted strops feel the same to me. Except .25 spray on balsa and .1cbn on nano cloth. 1st time this am on the nano cloth.
That is exactly where I am at with it. When Randydance got me to stop going straight up the grit ladder, and shave test @ the norton 8k level, I was surprised that it was such a good shave, I didn't really need to go further. Leaving need out of it, the nan 12k sure does give a smooth shaving edge that is an improvement over the 8k.Quote:

I recently got the nani 12k and so far have only used it with a Damascus which has hard steel. The few times I used it while OK I prefer the finish off my Escher. Once I try it on some "normal" blades I'll be better able to evaluate it.
After the naniwa 12k I use crox on balsa followed by .25 micron diamond slurry on felt, then 14 laps on linen and finish with a hanging leather strop, 30-100 laps. Seems to work fine for me.
I share the high regard for the N12k. I wouldn't want to be w/out it. After that, its been either a y/g Thuri or Nak. Asagi. Lately, I'm working on the Gokumyo 20k - which is nice by itself. Now, 3-10 strokes on the asagi after the Gokumyo has been quite pleasing. For my tastes, that N12 is prob. the best bang for the buck over 8k. Everything else will cost way more - for minute improvement.
To work in a yellow coticule, would it be better to use it before or after the Naniwa 12k?
before. coticules are generally regarded at an 8k mark with just water
If I was using a coticule as a finisher, which I sometimes do, I would use it after my 8k. Some coticules might equal a 12k, but rarely surpass it IME. YMMV.Quote:

After the 12k SS, I usually do a few laps on a hard leather paddle strop dusted with 0.5 micron CrOx, followed by an extended stropping on linen then leather.

I love the edge I get from the Naniwa 12k. I do the same thing with all my blades following the 12k, I strop on an Illinois 827, the follow up on a SRD Premium I strop. The edges are buttery smooth. I do this on vintage Sheffield steel of all grinds, 2 Hart razors, and 2 Thiers Issard razors made from the new steel.
After the Naniwa 12K I do 20 on my long bench strop pasted with chromium oxide, linen suede then leather and away to go..

I use after my 12k most of the times a paddle strop whit Crox. Works well for me.
I read some guys use after the Crox some diapaste, is this useful? Get i a Even smoother edge when i use dia after Crox?
The 10k and 12k Nanis are very nice finishers by themselves, I sometimes do a few laps on crox and ceox on a pasted strop when I am in the mood, sometimes not. The 12k Naniwa is the best finisher in that price range, and in shaving performance you won't get much better than that.

I really like the 12K Nani as well. I go a bit further after by doing 25-30 laps on a paddle strop with CrOx. I leave the tape on the razor to kep the angle, when I do this it seems to really smooth the edge. After the CrOx I do 50-75 laps on felt and shave. I get a very smooth edge this way. Just my 2cents.
Lately I have stopped using a crox pasted balsa strop after the Nani 12K and gone to using a Zulu Grey.

When I went from the 12K Naniwa to Crox spray on felt to leather strop I thought I was at the pinnacle of sharp and smooth. That is until I experimented with the Zulu Grey. Now my last experiment was to go up through and including the Nani 12K without tape- ala naturale'. Then put on only ONE layer of electrical tape (for a bevel 'enhancer' and not a dedicated bonafide microbevel) and perform appx 200 laps on the Zulu with the first 65-70 using its thin milky slurry. Let me tell you, if there were a HHT-6 my blades would have passed. I can go ATG anyway I want to now. As a bonus, the edge now seems more robust as well.
I agree! Lately I've found this to be a very nice sequence when using the Super-stone set: 1K-3K-5K-8K and then some laps on a very nice and very hard 'La Dressant Au Bleu' Coticule that I have before the 12K. I rate this particular coticule at about 10K+ and it produces a very smooth edge on my Sheffield blades without going to the 12k. For all others I finish on the 12k...strop and go. After the Naniwa 12k, I use the Gokumyo 20k, but haven't conclusively determined yet whether Crox would smooth the edge a just bit further to give a more comfortable first shave afterwards.
It shouldn't be necessary, but it seems to make some difference.
I use the Crox after the Gokumyo 20k. 5-7 laps and it does feel smoother.
It depends a bit. If I've taken a razor from bevel-setting all the way up, after the Naniwa 12K I give it 7-12 strokes on a lightly sprayed (diamond) fabric strop, then my usual daily stropping: 35 strokes on fabric, 60-80 on leather, and shave.
If I'm just freshening the edge, sometimes I give it 10-15 strokes on the Naniwa 12K (almost like using it as a barber hone) and then strop normally for shaving.
This is really weird, but recently I have found one of my barber hones seems to put a "something" to the edge after the Naniwa 12K. Not sure if it's real or imagined, but I have found if this barber hone is the last hone that touches the edge, it seems the edge is nicer. Don't know why, and I'm still pondering if this is even real or just hone-fantasy.

I use the Nani 12k then my Suehiro Gokumyo then 15-20 laps on my SRD modular paddle with English Leather. I find the Suehiro gives a better shaving edge on most razors then using chromium oxide. A lot depends on the steel. My Mastro Livi's just love the chromium oxide. then 7-10 laps on the English leather.
Well, I've read that some barber hones in the higher tiers of quality can put an equivalent edge to a 15k hone. Could be that you've lucked into a really good barber hone, or one that just makes a really smooth feeling edge for whatever reason. Mind if I ask what brand it is?Quote:

Still straight shaving, sometimes DE shaving, and enjoying it immensely.
