I just wanted to say that this is a great thread. I find the Suehiro to have much more consistent results than many of the natural stones I have.
So, would one buy this stone rather than, say, a Shapton 30K?
Yes, I would recommend the Suehiro over the two varieties of Shapton 30K.
The shapton pro 30k is close to the Suehiro in versatility and works good on most steels, the glass stone is a bit more of a hit and miss on some steels.
I've had all three for a hood while now, and for my razors, the Suehiro sees the most use.
The Shapton pro 30K is splendid on my kitchen knives though;)
The 20k is also cheaper, which is a good thing. :)
How does the Suehiro 20k compare to genuine escher finishing stone? If you could only have one, which would you pick?
+1 to what Jimmy said. I have a dark blue that works great, the suehiro edge is a keener one though imo. But the Escher has a smoother feel as naturals do.
I have the Shapton 30K Glass and to tell you the truth that hone has never really worked for me. My escher was always my top finisher but the Suhiro I think has knocked it off the top perch.
