I sell Norton 4k/8k stones and check each stone for quality before I ship. In the blue box is a little slip of paper which says that the stone may have color variations, that this is normal, and is not an indicator of a problem with quality. This is true also of natural stones such as the arkansas stones and the belgian stones. It's just cosmetic. The part about the gap between the two sides of the stone IS a quality problem and if you don't want to send it back, just smear some epoxy in their to keep the crack from propagating and widening.
