First a list of what I have:
10k naniwa ss, natural slates app 8-10k, 10-12k (it has been suggested by an experienced honerthat these grit estimates are a bit ggenerous, but that's by the by).
I am trying to work out which next coarsest stone I should get out of the naniwa 3k and naniwa 5k, also bearing in mind that I MAY eventually buy a 1k to complete the set.
So the question is 3k or 5k? Thanks in advance, ed.
Dunno ED, I use this progression of Naniwas; 1k which is only for badly buggered up edge, 3k/8k combo and a 12k. Looks like you have the 8k and 12k covered already so maybe a 3k Naniwa?

becuase i already had an 8k nani when i looked into filling the progression i got a chosera 1k and nani 5k because thats what Lynn said he liked to use in one of his videos. i would maybe suggest the 3/8k combo for you. you can set the bevel on a 3k and polish it on the 8k in like 5-10 laps rather than the 100 or whatever you do now on the slates
5k to 10k naniwa is a big jump. You will be spending a long time on the 10. I use those stones and I go 5-8-10. You would think the 8 and 10 would be close, but the 10 is a lot finer. You need 8k to prep for finishing.

Go with the 3k. I use chosera 1k, naniwa ss 3k, 5k, 8k, 12k. They work great for me.
Like I said, the slate is around 8k, so it should fill that slot if needed. I did consider looking for nani 1k/3 or 5k combo, but I couldn't see one. Maybe I looked in the wrong places.

I could go 1/3k, 1/5k or 3/5k. Damn choices. Grrr
I use 3/5/8k before my 10k SS, IMO a jump from 3k to 10k may be a bit of a stretch, while 5k to 10k jump is definitely going to work well.
My vote is for 5k.

I really like the 5k it really begins to finish the edge IMO, it is my workhorse out of the bunch.

I agree there's a gap between 8 and 12, but you've got that covered. I find 3 and 8 ok, but use a pyramid.
My advice would be to get the 3/8 because it gives you a three, and an eight, :) which will let you compare to the natural, and/but be perhaps a bit more trustworthy, which, imho, is the most important thing when you're learning to hone.
Ed, I have the Naniwa 1k, 5k, 8k, 12k. Really useful set that covers just about everything. If I were well-off I'd add a 3k.
Where sells the combo ss's I tried 330_mate but he only seems to have single grits. And perhaps I lime untrustworthyness :) and why do most of you seem to get a chosera 1k over a ss 1k?Quote:

It's all personal taste as far as that goes. For a resto I go 1k chocera, 2k naniwa green aoto, 5kss, 8kss if its taken a good edge by then, if it's being a pain then 8k naniwa snow white...this one gives a much keener edge to me, then 12ss to finish, I also have a 6k takenoko I break out for the heck of it sometimes, it gives a smooth edge but a hazier finish like a japanese nati. The 3k just makes the process a bit quicker, but I didn't like the feel of it (little soft to me). I think the 1, 5, 8, 12 is a perfect progression.

Well I am still somewhat torn, and to add to the confusion the 3/8 combo is looking like a contender, it's about the same price as buying a 10mm 3&8k seperately, but I like the idea of the more substantial single 20mm stone. Oh indecisions buggin' me !

The Nani 3/8 combo is what I use and unless you plan to hone for a living it will last a very long time doing the odd razor now and then.

Hi Ed,
Don't know if this helps, but Lynn in his video uses the following progressions with Naniwa stones for honing and coments on how comfortable he is with it. He sets the bevel at 1K, Naniwa 5k, Naniwa 8K, Naniwa 12K then CrOx and strop.
Goog Naniwa and Lynn Abrams and you should see the vid.
I only know as I've just started to research the honing and settled on a 12K for my first. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. ;)
