Sharpening/Honing with a Chef's Choice Diamond Hone Sharpener?

I'm about due to have my straight razor resharpened. I was looking for a sharpening stone to buy but I have access to a Chef's Choice Diamond Hone Sharpener 110. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts/experience about using one of these. I know it can be used to sharpen and hone straight knives (non-serrated) and have a relative that loves it. I can't find anything about using it on a straight razor though. In theory i think it could work but was wanting to get some input before i did anything. Or if anyone has any suggestions on at home kits/supplies, that would be appreciated as well. Thanks

I wouldn't let one of those things touch one of my razors with a ten foot pole, don't do it.

If that is one of the pull through electric or manual models a resounding NO
The angle is not even right.
A flat hand stone is what you are looking for,
if it just needs a touch up any of the below and many more will work
A Naniwa 8k and or 12k, Norton 8k, Barber's hone, Shapton 16k.
If more extensive sharpening is needed you will need a lower grit stone.
If you are looking into purchasing a set up to start maintaining your blades I would look at SRD and sharpeningsupplies.com.
They both have good prices on them and between the two you should find stock.
I would start by watching Lynn and Glens video's before anything else.
See if you have any local members in your area you could meet up with to help you start your journey.
You may want to send that one out and get another blade or two to practice on.
Just a few things to consider.

Yeah, it's one of the electric pull through ones. I thought it might work but wasn't sure. All it needs is a touch up so i'll look into your suggestions and websites. I've been looking around for a stone for a couple days actually. Thanks for the advice. It's greatly appreciated.

A 12k Naniwa might be something for you.

If you are going to more than a touch up I would look for a mentor/ senior member in your area it will help immensely.
Take that from someone who likes the hard road.... :o
I don't know where in WV you are but we have several members in VA, Kentucky and I am just across the VA line in TN.

When looking for honing solutions for razors, if you can't find info on a particular option, then it is not useful for razor.
I would not put a knife trough one of those electric sharpeners either.

If you check and see what others on this forum and other shaving forums are using you can pretty well be sure anything not in regular use is not suitable. There is a good reason certain things seem to be in standard use, they are proven to work. It is a good thing you asked and you did get good advice not to bother. Keep to the tried and true.

I have a blade that has been honed down to the nubs, that I will pass through the sharpener.. I know it puts a stellar edge on my Wusthoff & Henckels kitchen knives..

Be sure and let us know how it shaves after the sharpener treatment then.

Hi, I just did a quick search fir "chefs choice" In the search box (top right of page), I got 5 pages of results, admittedly not all will be about sharpeners, one post mentioned a chef's choice kettle. I am pretty sure a search for edge pro would come up with a lot of results.
Sharpening systems don't seem to be recommended, in fact pretty much the polar opposite by experienced honers. I would say you have made a good choice to not go down that route.

While you shop for rocks you might want to see if you can get your edge back to working keenness on some newspaper. If that fails you could add some compound. 10k diamond paste or Cromium Oxide, something like that. Not to put off buying a hone, but if you can keep shaving in the interim you can relax, and take your time coming to a decision.

I have seen Barbers hones in real nice shape go for cheap on eBay, picked up 3 myself.
Spyderco sticks worked well, before I got my Barbers hones.

Unlike a knife, a razor's proper edge angle is built into the geometry of the blade itself. The razor's blade becomes it's own sharpening angle guide. When a razor is laid flat on a hone, the edge angle is set by the thickness of the spine and the width of the blade. That's why a flat hone can be used to sharpen any width razor. A razor's blade geometry is really rather an ingenious solution to enable lifelong sharpening with a flat hone yet maintain a relatively constant and sharp edge angle as the years pass. A razor's blade is a well thought out tool that uses a simple principle that endures, turning a grooming task into an enjoyable hobby.

I bought the second for a coworker, but it was in such nice shape I decided to keep it myself and offer to hone his razor when he needed it.
The third I bought for my brother, but it is also so nice, I may just do his touchups myself.

I'm actually going to have a member on here hone it for me. I'm not going to rush too much into it. I'll have someone do it right while i look for the proper tools.

Ok, so water squirted though my nose when the picture popped up on the “Chef’s Choice” Google search.

Here at the local Farmers Market there is a guy in a trailer “sharpening knives” I can hear the grinder/belt sander going in the bowels of the trailer as I walked by.

He came out with a beautiful long Carbon Steel knife with a gorgeous custom maple burled handle and held up the knife and proceeded to show the lady how well her knife now sliced paper.

She was dully impress and made gushing noises.

I felt sick.

Wise choice, sending it out.
