Possible to have bevel set with some microchips?

wHey, gents.

Title says it all really. I'm using a 1k to set the bevel. I've taken a chip out of the heel and the heel up to the toe side of the middle of the edge look great. The upper toe, however, has some barely visible chipping. I don't want to "overhone", but I realize that sometimes it just takes as long as it takes. I thought I had used overpressure causing the microchipping, so I dialed down the pressure and increased the reps a bit but can't seem to make the wee chips disappear. They did get a little smaller. BTW, there was no pitting or anything on the razor that I saw. It's a vintage Globusmen,,solingen steel.

Its pretty dern close to passing the TPT.

If it helps to know, my honing regimen is 1k stone to 3k-8k-12k Naniwa followed by CrOx felt and CrOx leather.

As I said, I'm just concerned about overhoning. My last 2 bevel sets went pretty well, one vintage solingen and one vintage Sheffield. Contrary to some shared experiences, the latter seemed to set a bevel in less that 1/2 the time of the solingen(though it was a bit beat up).

I for one am confused and would like to know if you have only ‘set the bevel’ or if you have gone onto the other hones?!?!?! :shrug:

I'm honing at the 1K level. I just included the regimen in case you all thought the regimen might clear up the 'micro chips' through the progression. Meanwhile, I've put the razor down at the 1K level and re-lapped the 1k stone and will wait to hear a little feedback.

'IF' I understand you correctly you are still at the 1K level and are seeing 'micro chips'? Have you advanced to a higher grit stone to see if the 'chips' are diminished or vanish?

I had a similar situation and once I started on the 4k stone the chips slowly 'melted' away!

Nope. I'm stil l honing at the 1K level and won't progress until satisfied which is starting to happen.

I relapped the stone and the "chips" are melting away. Nearly gone. I'll post back if its not the case. I'm a beginner honor.... and lovin' it.

Sometimes, I'm reading too much into what I see through a 30x loupe, I think.

Forget about overhoning. It almost never happens in real life.

As to the chips: I've found that nine times out of ten, when I think my low grit stone is chipping the blade, it's just an indicator that I haven't hit good steel yet.
Though, there is that other one time out of ten...

Aside from my first and second(donor razor while 1st got pro-honed), all my razors are vintage.

Each and every one of them is unique and an enigma inside a mystery wrapped in a riddle(;))

Such an interesting way to get involved with SR shaving. I shaved with a bevel up Geo Wostenholm that I honed myself to, well, scary sharp(at least to me). I save my pro-honed razor like the sword from the stone, the shining city on the hill. Humbly, the Lynn/Glen method works.

Si, how did you remove the chip and how big was it?

How much magnification are you using? At 400X a 1k edge will look chipped, so will a 8K edge.

At 1K the edge will look some what chippy. If a lot of pressure was used to remove the chip, it can cause the edge to be weakened and cause chipping down the progression.

Steel does have a memory and pressure will leave a “Lasting Impression.” No seriously it will or better said can leave heavy stria. If you used a low grit diamond plate, chipping is common post 1K.

Most probably you are over thinking it. Lightly Joint the edge on the 1K corner 1-2 strokes and reset the bevel using very light pressure, If it improves the edge progress to the 3K.

For me an edge under 100X does not really clean up and appear straight until after at least the 3-4K honing.

Use very light "no pressure" strokes on the 1K to see if the so called micro chipping goes away…try 10 strokes or so. In my experience the edge should look relatively smooth even after the 1K to show a proper bevel before moving on.

Yeah. Did just that last night. They smoothed out quite a bit. Not perfect, but I'm going to give a few more on the 1k... going eaaaasy.
