Just got mu new coticule to play with - there is a tan and a black side to both the slurry stone and the hone - I know the tan side is the coticule - question is, is there any use for the other side other than a backing?

If the backing is black it is made of slate and of little use, if it were blue that would be an entirely different story.
Soft slate type backing, not useful for honing purposes.
If you have natural combo then the BBW side can be used as well.
I'm not sure if it's blue or black - kinda has some greenish tint to it... if it's a backing why would the slurry stone have it too???

The slurry stones are cut offs after the backing was applied. BBW is purple with distinct dots, the slate backing is plane black. If you are not sure which you have post pics of the backing and the side of the stones.

The back of my coticule is a purplish/blue color & I use it often in the honing process, right before I go to the yellow side.
