Finally Got My Method Down!

After many months of hit-or-miss honing, and many tugging or otherwise uncomfortable shaves, I managed to repeat a nice shave-ready edge on 4 razors. At first I tried to duplicate exactly what I saw on Lynn's videos, and gssixgunn's, and on and on. After grinding away and not giving up I have come to a point where I can confidently sit down with a razor and my hones and produce an edge that can shave well. What a relief! It definitely is a sense of accomplishment, and I look forward to getting even better. My hat is WAY OFF to all you fellas that can hone. It is an art indeed.

I ran 2 over the stones last night, tested 4 on my face with coffee this morning. 3 hits. I was coming off the bevel-setting stage too early--oversimplified but that was most of it.

and that little 4/8 (razor not stone) is amazing.

I had the usual problem of a newbie when I started honing. I had 50 years experience sharpening blades (pocket knives through bush hogs) so I figured honing a razor would just be an extension of what I already knew. WRONG! After months of frustration, I started really studying the videos and info on this site and came to appreciate and practice the techniques of the hone masters. Now I'm pretty confident I can get a good edge most of the time, but I'm still not perfect though the last 4 razors I honed are giving me great shaves. Practice and constant attention to detail and technique are what I have learned here. Thanks to the great mentors who have shared their hard won wisdom with us newbies.

Well, kinda walking on the OP's post, but this might help a bit. I suggest watching it a few times and in between honing attempts. It's not necessarily about bevel setting although the technique is the same...making two sides meet at the edge and it is indicative of the mistakes, challenges and just plain reminders that every one of us need/needed in the beginning. It really is the norm!!
