A crafty idea !!....What stone are you using there to set the bevel ?
I did find that rocking the blade was easier with the longer piece of tape. But I had very inconsistent results with blade sharpness. I could get the first 3/4 sharp and the heel would be dull or the other way around. I am not very good at honing but I'm getting better. If my blades are honed by pros I can maintain a blade. I honed a WB from bevel set to 15k successfully ( it's one of my fav shavers). When I started using one hand and keeping my elbow up things started slowly falling into place. It might work for some but didn't for me
I don't think it is a good idea. Though it might help prevent lengthwise rocking of the blade, it likely would prevent the proper torquing of the blade. The tape only would be capable of pushing the spine down but would not apply the appropriate pressure on the edge. If you are torquing on the heel and not on the toe you could have trouble getting consistency along the length of the blade.
