Two Questions - 1 Thread

So my first question, as i'm sending my first razor out to be honed by member here "elbonator"I want to know if his work will be a good example of a professionally done edge.

Second question, might go in the gold dollar thread but maybe not.(This isn't the razor being sent out) How do I tell if I need to alter the shoulders or something? It sits flat on the stone for most part. I think it will hone, it shaves arm hair easily enough and it isn't supposed to be shave anything. I payed like 5$ shipped. But it is for hone practice mostly.

If it gets stuck while doing motions or not get sharp evenly do I have to grind it?

Ahh, the Elbonator! Was he not the guy who honed with his elbow up really high?

If you are looking for something to learn to hone on why not start with something with no geometry problems that you know will shave well in the end. If the stabilizers get in the way when you are honing they may need to be cut back, it is hard to tell without pictures. I am un aware of elbonator's edges.

I didn't send anything. I just emailed. I wanted to have a quick turn around on my razor, not sure who to use...

And the GD thread was apparently closed. It was only a 3$ razor anyway so fun to mess with.

In his defense, the original poster does-admittedly with some convolution-explain that he hasn't yet sent the razor to said member but is still in the process of contacting said honer.

Who knows? It seemed, to me, more of a clarification of his ambiguous first post - an addendum, as it were.

At any rate, there is almost certainly a member on the afore-linked-to page who has been active more recently than the one mentioned in the original post.

I honestly haven't heard anything about Elbonator's honing one way or the other. If, as has been suggested, he's no longer really active here (I checked and his last activity here was in Nov 2013 according to his profile page) that doesn't necessarily mean he's not active at all, but it does mean that he could be difficult to get hold of through this forum.

If you've now made reciprocal contact with him then the ball's in your court. If you haven't, I'd suggest taking a look in the member services section of the Classifieds here. Many people offer honing services and they may be easier to contact.

On the Gold Dollar thing. My opinion on them is I wouldn't buy one. I've honed a few for people and if you can get them there they shave OK, at least on the initial shave test. No idea how well they hold their edges more generally. But yes, they have some quality issues with scales and grind, and yes some require remedial work before you can hone them. I just think why bother with pot luck when for about $100 you can get shave-ready certainty (e.g. dovo, ralph aust, a new Boker)?

$100 is nothing for something that will provide quality shaves well beyond your lifespan.

But - the person who changed horse mid stream and caused the confusion is the OP, ie the OP is the 'convoluter'.
