help with an old blade please

Hello, I am a beginner when it comes to razor honing and would like a bit if advice if possible.

I have recently re handled and cleaned up an old Krauss razor and now trying to get it into a shaving state. The problem is I started to set the bevel on a DMT extra fine bench stone and it has shown something that I just don't know what to do with as it's not really something you come across sharpening knives.

You can see in the photo where the stone has done its work but only in the right most corner (same and even on both sides). Before I go any further, should I carry on with the 1.2k stone and let things settle down naturally ? Should I be bread knifeing the edge to get it all straight? Or is there something else wrong ?

Any help will be greatly appreciated :-)

Whatever you do, do not breadknife it. The profile of that blade is correct from what I see in the photo. First take a 'sharpie' - magic marker, and color the edge. When you go across the hone you'll see whether or not you're stroke is correct to make contact all the way across the bevel.

Fix thee heel hook and use more of a heel forward stroke to help keep the stabilizer off the hone,
you will probably want to ink the bevel and use a rolling stroke with a swop at the end to most effectively catch the entire edge on each stroke.

I am no expert but looking at the spine this razor has not seen much if any time on a stone. It may have some geometry issue from the origianl grind or it may have been honed with tape. You could add a layer or two of tape to see if that corrects the contact issue. If not then you well need to stay on the course stone until you have a consistent bevel. Make sure you have the edge and the spine in contact with the stone and keep at it until the bevel is set for the length. You may also need to adjust your stroke to accomodate the smile on this blade. As another option you could just not hone the heel of the blade.

It's hard to see on the photo but with the help from here I managed to set the bevel with the rolling x stroke. Thankyou again :)

You can also bring the heel edge forward of the stabiliser by a little judicious grinding.

Ahh nice tip, thank you. Looks like this one will be going back on the rough stone to tidy it up. All I have done is flattened off the hook but that method looks much tidier :)

Just out of curiosity what happens if you shave with a heel hook ? I had it my mind that it wouldn't be pretty and had no intention of finding out. I suppose it will depend on the severity of the hook but I'm just guessing.

No probs.

Shaving with a heel hook is a risk for nicking etc so not a good idea.
