Barbers Hone (Strop Back) repair

I wonder if anyone would know what glue was used to attach the strops to the felt backing of the strop back hones?

I have a couple that need strop replacements and some in need of repair. I don't know about using contact cement, It is fairly permanent, although that may have been the point in the first place. It may make for another replacement impossible.

Of course, I am 70 so what would be the worry. I just want to go "original" if possible.

Absolutely. No idea however back in the day it was probably animal based. But like I said.. Not the faintest. :-S

I've fixed several & from looking at the old leftover residue, I would guess rubber cement, Elmer's. That's what I use. The glue needs to be somewhat flexable, as the leather strop is to give slightly, reason for the backing between the stone & leather.

I've used "Shoe Goo" for the only one I have done. It is a tacker than rubber cement, remains flexible, and permanent.

Just remember to get all the surface prep done before gluing.
