Steel removal has to be equal on both sides of the edge for the razor to function properly. So pass/stroke or lap means the same. Pass is a lot less intuitive, and lap is more descriptive as to what it means.
I use pass almost all of the time when I talk about honing/stropping
All due respect to those who hone "Pyramid" and all...
But, it just seemed so much easier(and was/is) to do the monkey see monkey do method, and imitate a master. Thank you, internet!
Throw the "Pyramid" method away when talking to honing novices, I say.
