600 grit, both sides. Do the 4k side first, then the 8k, then rinse it under running water while rubbing it firmly with your palm or with a nylon pot scrubber to help loosen any grit that may have embedded in the stone.
Why 600? Why not 800 or 1k?

I like to finsh with 1000.

On their instruction sheet Norton says to use 600 grit wet/dry to lap the hone. Other grits will obviously work but 600 is not an arbitrary number, or at least it's not *my* arbitrary number.Quote:

I tried papers for flattening stones and it made me crazy. I eventually ended up with a DMT diamond hone in Coarse. You can lay into it and flatten a hone in under a minutes. I kept tearing the papers and I got frustrated.
