What should a well honed edge look like under a 30x loop?
It should look ready to shave test eg a fully set bevel & no chips.
I use the loop to spot burs, wires, chips anything out of the norm.
I use a loop to see if the bevel is consistant from heel to toe.
I use the loop to determine if my edge is cutting consistantly from the edge to the shoulder of the bevel, the full lenght of the blade, heel to toe.
To me "well honed" is determined at the shave & I don't believe that there is one exclusive visual indicator that can answer that question.
I'm guessing at this part,,,," Different steels (razor's edges) may look different under the same 30x loop." :shrug:
20-30 power is great for looking straight down on the edge for bevel set and at finish to make sure micro-chips have not developed, from too much pressure, bad or very hard steel.
A good edge will look like a dark blur. Any damage will be a shiny reflection.
It is quick and easy method, to see any damage to the edge.
