is the main stone whether it be a coticule or a j nat, would that be your highest gritstone say 30000, or would it be the lowest gritstone say a thousand? :thinking: as I'm understanding that it's the highest gritstone and then you use rubbing stones that go from coarse-to-fine finally finishing up on like 30,000 grit stone only.is this correct?
Not on coticules. That is usually the way with JNats, but for coticules it's normally heavy slurry for the coarser work, then gradual dilution to straight water for finishing. Some coticules are much better than others though. I have one that is pretty meh and takes forever to finish with but leaves a very keen edge and one that is very very fast but when diluted to straight water still gets just as keen. Both edges are certainly shaveable though.
I'm not sure that I understand the question. By one stone honing are you referring to the videos that Glen and Lynn did a while back, where they took a razor with a fresh 1K bevel set and then finished on a coticule or an Escher? I have tried it a few times and it is an advanced technique that requires intimate knowledge of pressure use in order to get a great shave in as short of a time as they do it. I think that can be said about all of their honing too though.

But if you are looking to know if your base stone will be more like 1k or 30k for one hone honing with slurry (generated by nagura stones or diamond plate) answer is: the highest grit hone is your base not the otherwise.

Do a search here also for "The Ax Method" it shows you how efficient jnats can be.
In the olden days of SRP the one stone method used by most honemeisters including Lynn was the dual grit Norton 4K/8K.

I have always done one stone honing. Well technically two but of course you're going to use a bevel setter... I hope. Any ways. I don't have a JNAT so I can't speak on those but with a coticule or CNAT or escher or what have you, you will start with a razor that has its bevel set already. Then build a moderate slurry. I like mine more on the muddy side especially with my coti but thats because its my coti and probably different than yours. Then I hone until I feel like its time to dilute with a few drops of water. Again this comes with feel and knowledge of your stone that you are using. Some stones are faster and thus would the slurry would be diluted sooner than other stones even of the same type or vein. This goes one till you are at clear water and then you would finish your stone on clear water. I usually use my coticule not as a finisher but as my work horse stone. I will go from bevel set to finishing on water with the coticule then after that I usually finish on a black arkansas or CNAT

There is only one Hone that is proved to be 30k and that is a Shapton and I sure would NOT want to try a one stone style progression on that :p
