sic powder
I've been at this honing thing a few years now. you know lapping with dmts atomas etc. Which are costly. So as many of u know about the uses of sic powder for lapping.i just wanted to sing praise for the use of them and the economics behind using them. When using them with tile marble granite or flat porcelain tile there fantastic. The working area is huge and there speed is just fantastic. A lil goes along way.. i lapped all my hones in about a half hour. And my hones just don't sit on the shelf!! If anyone is considering there use i would highly recommended them. These powders are readily available on eBay and amazon.

just read about sic powder the other day for lapping. What grit do you use? what's the best way to use it? thanks
-
I use 120 grit to get them flat, then I am using atomas for smoothing but am getting some 320 and maybe some 600 to finish. Its FAAAAAST. MUCH faster than any diamond plate I ever used for sure. And for 3 grits you have a lifetime worth of lapping for less than one atoma plate. I burned mine in less than a year even using wet/dry for initial flattening. $100 down the drain IMO. And the dmts are worse. You can certainly use the sic and then light touchup to smooth with wet/dry.

The powder is avaiable in various grits up to fine enough to grind lenses. Like any other abrasive, you choose the appropriate grit depending on speed and smoothness required - so for fast cutting a lower grit and then run up from there. If you need to take off a lot of stone start at 180 or so and then add a few in-betweens and finish on say 600.

I've been using the stuff for years to lap stones. I have the Shapton Lapping Plate with an assortment of their grits. It works rapidly and I can put a real polish on the stones. Almost too pretty to use.Har har.

Where are you guys buying sic powder?
What would I need to lap my stones? For say 20-30 lappings
I have nortons and shaptons

Amazon, ebay. Google it and see what you find. I just got some 600 grit on ebay 8 oz for $10 bucks or so shipped. 8 oz is a lot. I start with half a teaspoon and add as I need. Get a granite tile from home depot for 5 bucks or scrap granite counter or plate glass.

do you use water with it?
-
Hello, yes I put a half a teaspoon in the middle of the plate add a small amount of water to it, spread it out on the plate, then start lapping, keeping it wet, but too much water and your powder will wash away, add more powder and water if necessary. I think there are some youtubes on it for sure.
